    • This vehicle headlamp comprises a housing adapted to be fixed to the body of a vehicle and having a light-transmissive portion through which upper and lower beams are directed. Within the housing is a discharge-type lamp serving as the light source for both these beams and an arrangement for mounting this lamp in a fixed location with respect to the housing. Also located within the housing is a reflector that is mounted on the housing in such a manner as to permit relative movement between the reflector on one hand and the housing and the lamp on the other hand. An actuating arrangement causes movement of the reflector between two spaced-apart positions while the lamp remains fixed relative to the housing. The reflector in one of said positions causes light from the lamp to be reflected from the reflector as the upper beam, and the reflector in its other position causes light from the lamp to be reflected from the reflector as said lower beam.

    • An aimable vehicular headlamp system has a discharge lamp assembly to be mounted to a vehicle body via aiming screws. The discharge lamp assembly comprises a discharge lamp bulb, and a bulb carrier subassembly directly coupled, both mechanically and electrically, to the lamp bulb. Also included is a lighting circuit assembly comprising a ballast section for providing a high alternating voltage, and an igniter section electrically connected between the ballast section and the bulb carrier subassembly of the discharge lamp assembly for causing the lamp bulb to glow by an electric discharge. At least the igniter section of the lighting circuit is mounted to the discharge lamp assembly, typically on the back of a reflector included in the discharge lamp assembly, for joint movement therewith relative to the vehicle body during the aiming adjustment of the discharge lamp assembly. Consequently, the lighting circuit assembly can be electrically connected to the discharge lamp assembly without use of any such elongate cables or cords as have been conventionally employed to this end.

    • An aimable vehicular headlamp system has a discharge lamp assembly mounted within a lamp housing via aiming screws. The discharge lamp assembly comprises a paraboloidal reflector, a discharge lamp bulb, and a bulb carrier subassembly electrically coupled to the discharge lamp bulb and mechanically supporting the same in position with respect to the reflector. Also included is a lighting circuit assembly comprising a ballast section for providing a high alternating voltage, and an igniter section electrically connected between the ballast section and the bulb carrier subassembly of the discharge lamp assembly for causing the lamp bulb to glow by an electric discharge. At leeast the igniter section of the lighting circuit is mounted to the lamp housing, with the igniter section electrically connected to the bulb carrier subassembly via flexible conductors of minimal lengths thoroughly disposed within the lamp housing.

    • A lamp containing a fill of xenon, mercury and metal halide is disclosed which serves as a light source for lighting applications and is particularly suitable for automotive forward lighting applications. The xenon ingredient operates to provide for instant light necessary for automotive applications, whereas, the mercury and metal halide ingredients operate to provide for a long life, high efficiency lamp relative to either a xenon or tungsten lamp. The dimensions of the xenon-metal halide lamp of the present invention are approximately three-fifths (3/5) of those of a typical tungsten lamp utilized for automotive forward lighting applications. The reduced dimensions of the xenon-metal halide lamp allows for correspondingly reduced dimensions of a related reflector for such a xenon-metal halide lamp which accommodates the needs of aerodynamically styled automobiles.

The vacuum shroud substantially eliminates the detrimental catephoresis effects of operating a metal halide lamp from a low frequency alternating current (A.C.) source or direct current (D.C.) sources, reduces the sodium migration losses typically experienced with a metal halide lamp, reduces the photoelectrons contribution to sodium losses for the metal halide lamp, reduces the detrimental effects of the hydrogen and water that may be within the general confines of such a metal halide lamp, and provides a containment function for an inner envelope that may be operated at a relatively high pressure and possibly experience rupturing to cause the dislodgment of the ruptured material to possibly fracture a glass member confining the metal halide lamp.

    • An alternative lighting system luminaire to conventional high intensity discharge light fixtures such as mercury vapor, metal halide, high pressure sodium lighting fixtures includes a highly polished reflector made of silver film or highly polished aluminum with a plurality of fluorescent biax lamps to provide both greater lumen production per watt and retain a greater percentage of it's lumen output over the fixtures life. This system allows one for one fixture replacement when substituted for 400-watt metal halide, 400 watt high pressure sodium, and 400-1000 watt mercury vapor high intensity discharge lighting fixtures in design or replacement applications. The luminaire utilizes very high efficiency "Dulux L" high lumen compact fluorescent lamps, which are each shaped like a single inverted "U" and are a minimum of 16 inches long. The lamps extend parallel to the face lens of the fixture and can number from one to eight in quantity. A highly polished reflector is placed above the lamps allowing for the maximum amount of light to be emitted from the face of the fixture with the lens. The lamps are secured and powered by sockets fastened to plates, which are mounted at two opposing sides of the fixture. Ballasts are located in the area between the reflector and the top of the fixture. The upper section of the fixture is angled upward to create a pyramid effect that gives stability to the fixture when it is pendant hung from a ceiling.
