    • Profiled bolt mounting unit for mounting on a structural member, comprising a blind rivet body having a sleeve and a flange for abutting against the structural member provided for mounting purposes with a mandrel having a setting head and a pull stem which may be gripped by a setting tool and detached from the mandrel at a predetermined breaking point (break neck) after exceeding a certain pulling force. The predetermined breaking point is separated by such a distance from the flange that the portion of the mandrel between the flange and the predetermined breaking point acts as a profiled bolt, whereby the mandrel portion remaining inside the blind rivet body after the setting process projects the profiled bolt portion away from the flange.

    • This invention relates to an improved connector construction for releasably connecting one tubular member to another. A first tubular member has an aperture contained therein. A screw fastener member is mounted in the aperture. The screw fastener has an enlarged portion on the exterior of the tubular member preventing the screw fastener from passing through the aperture into the interior of the tube. The screw fastener member has a second enlarged portion within the tube. The space between the first and second enlarged portions is less than the thickness of the tube to hold the screw fastener member frictionally in the tubular member and to prevent rotation of the screw fastener member relative to the tubular member. A second tubular member has a portion positioned adjacent to the aperture in the first tubular member and the screw fastener member. A second screw fastener member is rotatably mounted in the second tubular member and is held therein. The second screw fastener member is threadedly mounted in the first mentioned screw fastener member connecting the second tubular member to the first tubular member.

    • A blind rivet is injection molden from plastic material. It comprises a female member molded about a male member. The female member is comprised of a flexible tubular wall and a flange about the upper end thereof, the wall defining a stepped portion in the axial bore thereof at the upper end and a plurality of elongate perforations about the wall. The male member is comprised of a shank in the axial bore and axially movable in relation to the tubular wall, an enlarged head at one end in intimate contact and engagement with the lower end of the female member, and a head portion at the other end and protruding from the upper end of the female member. The head portion is shaped to be gripped by a tool for pulling the shank axially through the bore and the shank has a series of peripheral claws each forming a shoulder facing the lower end so that, upon pulling, the perforated flexible tubular wall collapses and expands radially and successive claws snap their respective shoulders into engagement with the shoulder of the stepped portion, the engagement of the shoulders maintaining the tubular wall of the female member radially expanded and locking the male member against axial movement towards the lower end of the female member.

    • A blind fastener system comprising a ductile sleeve having an expansion portion of small inner diameter in a thin workpiece and having a bulbing portion of larger inner diameter extending on the blind side of the workpiece, and a threaded expander member having an expander portion for expanding the sleeve expansion portion and a head portion for bulbously deforming the sleeve bulbing portion, both actions occurring on axially pulling the expander member. The expander portion has a tapered, radiused leading end followed by a configured (splined, knurled, etc.) portion for the remainder of the active length. The protrusions of the configured portion leave a void volume between them and between the minor and major diameters of the protrusions, and the volume of the sleeve expansion portion between the small inner diameter and the projection of the large inner diameter is approximately 0.5 to 0.8 of the void volume of the configured portion. The protrusions have blunt outer surfaces. The expander member may be a nut, in which case the minor diameter of the protrusion is at least 1.23 times the major diameter of the internal threads of the expander member, which threads are inwardly of at least a portion of said protrusions. The length of the bulbing portion is approximately one-half the outer diameter thereof, while the large inner diameter is approximately nine-tenths of the outer diameter of the sleeve bulbing portion. The axial length of the sleeve expansion portion is at least equal to the thickness of the workpiece, and the expansion section of the expander member is at least equal to the axial length of the expansion portion of the sleeve.The expander member may have internal threads, to serve as a nut, or may have a stem with external threads, to serve as a bolt or stud. The stud may receive an electrical connector, the fastener system being of suitable electrically conductive materials.

    • The fastening device is in the nature of a rivet wherein a tubular sleeve has a head on one end bearing against one side of the work, and an internally threaded tail. A screw extended through the head and sleeve is threaded into said tail, and is so positioned that the screw head is initially spaced from the head of the sleeve; the shank of the sleeve is slotted and the resulting strips are notched internally at about the middle so that by turning the screw the tail travels toward the head and the strips are folded flat against the other face of the work. In the method of making this fastener, after the hollow rivet with the head is formed, it is positioned in a die, and cutting blades are forced through the wall of the sleeve to cut parallel longitudinal slots dividing the middle portion of the sleeve into strips of arcuate cross section; then the sleeve is held in a die while a tool is inserted and rotated to cut a groove into the strips for facilitating the collapsing of the sleeve; then the screw is inserted into the sleeve and the tail of the sleeve is pressed or swaged into the screw to form the internal thread in the tail and hold the screw. The shank between the sleeve head and the adjacent ends of the slots is approximately equal to the minimum thickness in which the fastener is used. The sleeve head has a recess in both faces to accommodate suitable washers.
