摘要： Provided is a a catalytic converter capable of obtaining superior NOx purification performance while reducing the amount of a noble metal catalyst.A catalytic converter 10 includes: a substrate 1 having a cell structure in which exhaust gas flows; and catalyst layers 3 that are formed on cell wall surfaces 2 of the substrate 1. The catalyst layers 3 include a first catalyst layer 4 disposed on an upstream side of the substrate 1 in an exhaust gas flow direction and a second catalyst layer 5 disposed on a downstream side of the substrate in the exhaust gas flow direction. The first catalyst layer 4 is formed of a support and rhodium which is a noble metal catalyst supported on the support. The second catalyst layer 5 is formed of a support and palladium or platinum which is a noble metal catalyst supported on the support. The first catalyst layer 4 is formed in a range of 80% to 100% of a total length of the substrate 1 starting from an end of the substrate on the upstream side, and the second catalyst layer 5 is formed in a range of 20% to 50% of the total length of the substrate 1 starting from an end of the substrate on the downstream side.

摘要： A reverse flow hydrocarbon trap is provided that improves the conversion of hydrocarbons present in the exhaust gases of a vehicle to more environmentally benign compounds during cold engine starts. The trap includes a substrate having at least one exhaust gas passage therethrough, with the walls of the exhaust gas passage including a hydrocarbon trapping material and an oxidative catalyst. The substrate includes an inlet for hot exhaust gas from a vehicle engine and an outlet for the exhaust gas and further includes an inlet channel, an outlet channel, and an intermediate channel through which exhaust gas flows. The intermediate channel is oriented such that the flow of exhaust gas through the exhaust gas passage is reversed from the direction of flow in the inlet and outlet channels to improve the performance of the hydrocarbon trap.

摘要： A catalytic converter apparatus for use in an exhaust system of an internal combustion engine includes a housing having a gas inlet and a gas outlet, and at least one catalytic substrate element disposed in the housing. The at least one substrate element is divided into a plurality of zones or sections, the zones at least partially separated from one another to inhibit heat flow. The zones can be at least partially separated with walls. The walls can include insulating material for reducing the mobility of heat radially outwardly. Each of the zones defines a generally separate flow passage connecting the inlet and outlet in fluid communication. The apparatus can heat more rapidly from a cold start compared with conventional catalytic converters.
