    • An apparatus is disclosed for roll forming metal components including substantially channel-shaped members for use in a building structure. The apparatus includes a support frame assembly having front and rear portions. A mechanism is provided for selectively feeding at least one metal strip into the support frame assembly, the metal strip having a pair of side edges and a center web. A plurality of driver roll elements are mounted along the support frame assembly and are adapted to move the metal strip through the frame assembly. Finally, a plurality of spaced idler forming rolls are mounted for free rotation in pairs along the support frame assembly. The idler forming rolls are adapted to simultaneously air form the side edges of the metal strip into angularly extending side flanges by urging the side edges in opposing directions from the center web as the metal strip is moved along the frame assembly by the driver roll elements. In addition, a device for feeding metal strips to the roll forming apparatus is disclosed along with an apparatus for assembling metal wall frame structures, both stationary and foldable forms thereof, from channel-shaped members.

Vertical slidable studs each have a hat-shaped cross section and include a plurality of openings that provide a pathway for cables and wiring along the interior of a finished wall.     • A novel system for constructing smooth-faced metal framing and novel connectors therefore. The system and connectors of the present invention utilize known metal framing or wall studs that demonstrate a U-channel configuration having a base, sidewalls and marginal lips that extend inward from the sidewalls. A variety structurally related connectors, comprising at least a connector body, base flange, and two lip receiving grooves, are described. These connectors are capable of interconnecting metal framing performing all framing functions including, without limitation, floor and ceiling joists, top and bottom plates, roof rafters, roof rims, window sills, trusses, headers and wall studs. The connectors lock into place within the stud and are secured from the inside using fasteners applied into the non-surface aspects of the stud. The stud connectors demonstrate three dimensional rigidity and a box-like fit within the metal framing studs to form joints that are strong, durable and precise. The framing system using the stud connectors of the present invention leaves the outside surfaces of the framing members and studs smooth and continuous, without protruding fastener heads or interruptions of any sort. The resulting smooth outside surfaces can be covered much more easily and inexpensively than the uneven and generally awkward outside surfaces presently encountered in metal framed structures. The manner in which the connectors lock within the studs promote their safe and efficient installation. The system and connectors of the present invention enables an entire structure to be framed using one type and size of metal framing studs cut to appropriate lengths on site.

    • A wall assembly comprising a plurality of generally upright wall studs in assembled relationship to lower and upper generally horizontal support beams. The wall studs can be of the metal variety and have a generally C-shaped profile with a channel located opposite a major side member of the wall stud.     • The present invention comprises a portable wall structure including a metal cap forming the top of a wall structure, a metal floor track forming the bottom of the wall structure, and a series of channeled load-bearing studs that are secured vertically between the cap member and the floor track member. These vertical studs are composed of steel of about 20 gauge thickness. A vertical steel stud is positioned at each end of the wall structure to provide closed ends of the wall structure. This wall structure forms a separate unit of substantially rectangular configuration which may be prefabricated and separately transported to a building construction site. Some parts, such as top plates, corners, door surrounds, and window surrounds, made of wood, are included in some embodiments of the invention.

    • The method of making frames and frame units for modules of modular buildings includes steps of punching perimeter beams to form stops on the beams where cross-beams are to be located, and assembling the cross-beams with a pair of the perimeter beams by butting the ends of the cross-beams against corresponding stops to position the cross-beams without using jigs or fixtures to establish their positions. Retainers may be formed in the perimeter beams next to the stops to temporarily retain the cross-beams in place until they are welded to the perimter beams. In some frame units, the perimeter beams and cross-beams are metal channels, and the beams are assembled flange-to-flange and web-to-web. One weld is made to connect each abutting pair of flanges next to the webs, and another weld is made at a point separated farther from the webs so that the webs reinforce each other and the flanges reinforce each other. Cross-beams may also be welded to the stops on the perimeter beams. The invention includes the frame units, part of the strength and load handling capabilities of which are derived from particular arrangements of stops and welds.
