    • A web splicing method and apparatus to splice a running web to the web on a ready roll so as to avoid web speed and position mis-matches due to roll eccentricity and roll end wobble. After an adhesive splicing medium is applied to the leading end of the web on the ready roll, that roll is accelerated to a selected nominal splicing speed. The roll surface speed and end edge position are then measured at least at a location at or near the splicing medium thereon. The speed and edge position of the running web are also measured. During successive revolutions of the roll, the running web speed and the roll surface speed in the vicinity of the splicing medium are compared to produce speed difference signals which are applied to control the speed of the running web and/or the roll to match the speed of the running web and the surface speed of the roll at or near the splicing medium. Also, the edge positions of the running web and the roll end at or near the location of the splicing medium are compared to produce edge position difference signals which are applied to shift the lateral position of the running web and/or the roll to achieve a web edge position match between the running web and the web roll at or near the splicing medium. After the webs are matched thusly in speed and position, the splice is made between the two webs.

    • The tension on a tape web is controlled with a lock mechanism in an apparatus wherein a first dancer device, a pair of engaging-disengaging rolls, a second dancer device, and a pair of nip rolls are located in this order from the upstream side to the downstream side in the direction along which the tape web moves. The speed at which the engaging-disengaging rolls rotate is adjusted on the basis of the vertical position of a dancer roll of the first dancer device, and the speed at which the nip rolls rotate is adjusted on the basis of the vertical position of a dancer roll of the second dancer device, whereby the tension on the tape web is adjusted. A method for controlling the tension with a lock mechanism comprises the steps of locking the position of the dancer roll of the first dancer device at a predetermined position when the engaging-disengaging rolls disengage from each other, and releasing the dancer roll of the first dancer device from its locked position when the engaging-disengaging rolls engage with each other.

    • This relates to a dancer roll assembly wherein there are a pair of dancer roll assemblies disposed in side-by-side relation and each vertically disposed. Each dancer roll assembly includes an upper shaft and a lower shaft having spaced sprockets thereon which are vertically aligned and over which are engaged belts. Each pair of belts carries a dancer doll for vertical movement under the influence of a tensioned web passed around the dancer roll. The upper shaft is a control shaft and has connected thereto a pneumatic control motor which resists the rotation of the shaft and thus resists the upward movement of the dancer roll. After the dancer roll has moved to an uppermost permitted position, the pneumatic motor is actuated to rotate the upper shaft and thus return the dancer roll to its lowermost starting position. The tension on the web is controlled by controlling the air pressure to the air motor.
