    • An electric power steering apparatus includes motor relative angle detect means 48 including motor relative angle information calculating portions 48a ˜48c for calculating the relative angle information of an electric motor corresponding to a driver's steering amount applied to a steering system and a relative angle information compensating portion 48e for preventing the motor relative angle information calculating portions from being incapable of obtaining the relative angle information to thereby enable to generate the relative angle information all the time. The motor control means controls the electric motor based on arbitrary actual angle without setting an initial angle at the time of driving based on the relative angle information detected by the motor relative angle information detection means. It is restricted to impart uncomfortable feeling on the driver by using simply configured motor rotation angle detection means which prevents from increasing of the number of parts and cost.

    • Disclosed is an electric power steering apparatus including a steering shaft connected to a steering wheel of an automobile; a reduction shaft adapted to engage with the steering shaft and rotate; a direction sensor having a transmitter and a receiver; a rotation member formed on an end of the reduction shaft and positioned between the transmitter and the receiver; a motor for supplying steering power; a motor position sensor positioned on the motor to sense a rotational angle of a motor shaft; and an electronic control unit adapted to receive electric signals from the direction sensor and the motor position sensor, respectively, and calculate a steering angle. The electric power steering apparatus is equipped with a steering angle sensor adapted to sense an absolute steering angle using a direction sensor for sensing the rotational direction of a steering shaft and a motor position sensor for sensing the rotational position of a motor shaft. This reduces the manufacturing cost of the steering apparatus.

    • A steering control apparatus for an automotive vehicle is provided with s steering control system 41 that comprises a detected steering angle calculating section for calculating a detected steering angle θj based on a variation of a motor rotational angle detected by a motor rotational angle sensor 25. An electric motor 19 is connected to a steering wheel 33 through a reduction mechanism. As the motor rotational angle sensor 25 is provided on the the electric motor 19, resolution of the detected steering angle θj calculated based on the variation of the motor rotational angle becomes higher than that in the prior art, and thereby it becomes possible that the steered wheels are steered under the stable positioning control. Further, as the motor rotational angle sensor 25 is originally provided on the electric motor 19, the size and cost of the apparatus is restrained from being large and high.

    • An electric power steering system includes a steering wheel, an electric assist motor operatively coupled to the steering wheel, and an electronic controller operatively coupled to the assist motor. A steering wheel position sensor provides an output indicative of an angular position of the steering wheel. A motor position sensor provides an output indicative of a relative angular position for the motor. Steering wheel position sensor output is acquired at each of a plurality of angular positions of the motor, thereby establishing a set of points defining a curvilinear relationship between steering wheel sensor output and motor position sensor output. The set of points is sampled to calculate a straight line which approximates the curvilinear relationship, thereby reducing periodic errors in the steering wheel sensor output. The straight line is employed to determine a position offset for the motor position sensor output corresponding to a system zero position. The system zero position is a position for which the vehicle will travel along a linear, substantially straight-ahead path.
