The invention provides that the illumination device has a plurality of light sources (7) which are arranged radially around the axis (2) of the handle (3) on the fixed base body (1) and can be switched individually, a lightguide element (5) is permanently connected to the handle (3) and has a light input face, which is successively moved past the light sources (7) when the handle (3) rotates, and a light output face, which is assigned to a photosensitive element (8). The photosensitive element (8) is connected to an electronic circuit (9) for evaluating the output signal of the photosensitive element (8), it being possible to determine a rotary position of the handle (3) by successively switching the light sources (7) and evaluating the output signal of the photosensitive element (8).

When the power of the electronic apparatus is turned on, the rotational operation of the operating knob is can be performed by releasing the stopper part of the stopper means. Therefore, when the power of the electronic apparatus is turned off, that is, when the adjustment of the electronic apparatus is not needed, even when a user inadvertently touches the operating knob, the operating knob does not rotate. Thus, a previously set value is prevented from being inadvertently changed.

    • A range selector issues a range selection command signal representative of an operation range of a shift-by-wire type automatic transmission meeting with a driver's intention. The operating range is at least one of P(parking)-range, R(reverse)-range, N(neutral)-range and D(drive)-range. An actuator causes the transmission to assume a certain operation range when receiving an instruction signal. A control unit issues the instruction signal by processing the range selection command signal, so that the transmission is able to assume an operation range that meets with the driver's intention. The control unit is configured to carry out, when the range selector fails to issue the range selection command signal, presuming a range selection intended by the driver based on a previous operation of the range selector; and based on the presumption, causing through the actuator the transmission to actually carry out at least one of first and second range selection operations. The first range selection operation meets with the driver's intention and the second range selection operation is to maintain the operation range that has been kept just before the failure of the range selector.

    • A shifter apparatus includes a driver interface module (DIM) movable to request a transmission shift, and a display with indicia for showing the presently selected gear position and for showing a newly selected gear position. A controller is operably coupled to the driver interface module, the display, and sensors for sensing predetermined vehicle conditions. The controller shifts the transmission and changes the display if the vehicle sensors indicate that the predetermined vehicle conditions are met, but doesn't shift the transmission if the predetermined vehicle conditions are not met and further it resets the display to the first indicia. By this arrangement, the shifter senses and shifts based on relative position of the DIM and not absolute position. The shifter is storable and covers can be used to hide it when in the storage position.

    • A shifter includes a base and a driver interface module, such as a lever or knob, having a structural member attached to the base and held in a fixed position so that a handle on the structural member can be grasped and loaded by a vehicle operator. At least one load-measuring sensor, such as a strain gage, is attached to the structural member. The sensor outputs an analog signal in proportion to the load applied to the structural member by the vehicle operator. A circuit is connected to the load-measuring sensor for receiving the analog signal. The circuit is configured and programmed to output a transmission-shift control signal when the shift request signal reaches a predetermined minimum load value.
