    • A method of and apparatus that is continuously automatically operative in an in-line system is described for applying under heat, vacuum and mechanical pressure a photoresist-forming layer to printed circuit boards that already have been prelaminated by the loose application thereto of dry film as discrete cut sheets within the confines of the surface of the boards whereby a laminate without entrapped air bubbles and closely conforming to the surface contours such as circuit traces of the printed circuit board is obtained. Featured is a two-part conveyorized vacuum applicator comprising as one part two input conveyors in end-to-end relation and as the other part a belt conveyor and vacuum laminator. The belt conveyor is characterized in its use of an endless belt having an aperture therein through which, in the vacuum laminating condition of the applicator, the movable lower platen of the vacuum laminator is movable upwards into sealing contact with the upper platen of the laminator, with the printed circuit board to be laminated and a portion of the upper run of the endless belt contained within the vacuum chamber of the laminator.

    • An edge locating device is particularly useful in a system having an articulating frame for supporting and aligning a first sheet of material relative to a second sheet of material supported on a belt below. The device is attachable to the articulating frame and has an edge contact element for locating the edge of the first sheet and a radiation source and detector for locating the edge of the second sheet. The edge contact element, source and detector are fixed with respect to one another and movable between a first position wherein the element is spaced from the edge of the first sheet and a second position wherein the element contacts the edge of the first sheet. When moved to the second position the source and detector can be used to move the articulating frame until the edge of the second sheet is located.

    • An apparatus and method for registering and applying a web of film or sheet material bearing repeat indicia to respective uniformly-spaced receiving elements arranged serially and mounted for simultaneous movement in a given path. The receiving elements are moved in a cyclical intermittent indexing motion, with the elements remaining stationary in a rest period between indexing movements. A set of power driven draw rollers feed the web of material to the receiving elements at a constant rate while the receiving elements are being indexed. A brake is applied to the draw rollers so that they grip the web during said rest period. The web passes through a set of stretch rollers which free-wheel while the web is fed to the receiving elements. At least one of the stretch rollers is actuated in a reverse direction to stretch the web while the web is gripped by the draw rollers during the rest period of the receiving elements. A control means, including sensing means responsive to repeat indicia on a part of the web between the draw rollers and the stretch rollers, activates the one stretch roller on detecting certain of the indicia. The control means includes a time delay to activate the one stretch roller a predetermined time after detecting one of the indicia, and the stretch roller is deactivated when said one of the indicia again is detected by the sensing means as the web bearing the indicia is stretched in the reverse direction.
