    • A floor cleaner device is described comprising a rolling support on which is mounted a tiltable handle that can be secured in various angular positions during use by means of a set of solenoid actuated locking pins which engage a set of bores defined on the handle frame. During use, the device is balanced between a first set of wheels and a rotatable cleaning element. A second set of wheels is maintained in an elevated position by the handles during use and out of contact with the floor surface which is being cleaned. To conserve space during storage and when not in immediate use, the device may be positioned in an upright position and stable manner by tilting the handle to a vertical position and engaging the actuated pins into the appropriate bores to effect upright positioning. This tilt configuration will lower the second set of wheels into contact with a floor surface, and balance the device between the two sets of wheels, and consequently the device will occupy less space.

    • A floor polishing machine (10) according to the preferred form of the teachings of the present invention includes a body portion (12) having a platform (20), and a handle (16) pivotally mounted to the platform (20). First and second sets of wheels (68, 70) are provided adjacent the rear of the platform (20) and on opposite sides of the handle pivot (50). For coupling the handle (16) and the platform (20) together, a gas spring (53) is provided having a first end pivotally connected to the platform (20) and having a second end pivotally connected to the handle (16). The gas spring (53) urges the platform to pivot about the first set of wheels (68) downwardly in the rear and upwardly in the front. The motor (24) for rotating the polishing member (14) is pivotally mounted to the platform (20) by ears (23) so that the polishing member (14) can flushly abut the floor surface. The handle (16) is latched in an upright transport position by a pin (59) received in the first leg (85) of an L-shaped slot (81) formed in a latch (74) pivotably mounted to the platform (20) and is allowed to pivot in operating positions when the pin (59) is received in the second leg (83) of the L-shaped slot (81). The latch (74) includes a cord hook (77), with the spacing between the handgrip (89) of the handle (16) and the cord hook (77) being less in the operating positions than in the transport position so that an electric cord (87) wrapped around the handgrip (89) and the cord hook (77) can be removed without unwrapping when the handle (16) is moved from its transport position to an operating position.

    • An improved splash guard designed to prevent wax, cleanser, debris and the like from being spattered from a floor cleaning apparatus, the guard consisting of an elongate strip of flexible, waterproof material with a length greater than a peripheral base of standard floor cleaning apparatus and a width greater than the height of the apparatus so that the strip is capable of encircling the apparatus to form an enclosed wall adapted to the general shape of the peripheral base, extending generally from the floor up to the height of the housing of the apparatus. A bottom, straight edge of the strip is designed for constant, sliding contact with the floor, and thus preferably includes a strip of low friction material which also retards debris adherence.     • There are disclosed, in combination, a resiliently compressive, porous rotary buffing pad and a pad holder adapted for use in floor polishing machines. The pad holder is of one piece construction and is formed about its perimeter and toward its center with areas which compress the pad to increase friction with a floor during polishing while reducing overall energy requirements. Immediately adjacent to each such compression area the pad holder defines an area which does not contact the pad and which promotes filtering and storage of particulates. This combination, with adjacent integrally connected compression, non-compression areas promotes efficient polishing with reduced energy resulting from the use of discreet compression areas; and dust or particulate absorption and storage within the non-compression areas.

    • An improved high-speed floor treating machine is provided comprising a frame, a control and guiding handle extending rearwardly of the frame and an electric motor for rotating a floor contacting pad is secured. The improvement of this invention includes an elongated low clearance extension member secured to the frame. The vertical axis of the forward shaft may be offset from the frame longitudinal axis by angular rotation of the extension member with respect to the frame. The floor contacting pad extends radially beyond the extension member for providing ease of access to difficult treating areas. An alternative embodiment of the invention comprises a novel baseboard floor contacting pad attached to the forward shaft of a modified extension member.

    • A high-speed polishing machine is provided which has a polishing pad rotatable at speeds substantially in excess of those heretofore usually employed for polishing machines. The new polishing machine is designed to operate at speeds in excess of 1,000 rpm and preferably about 1,150 rpm. Motors capable of rotating the polishing pads at such speeds operate close to the limits of 110 volt power and if excess pressure is placed on the pad, it will slow down substantially and frequently cause the motor to stall. The new machine has rear wheels which partially support the weight of the machine and has means for raising and lowering the wheels so as to control the pressure on the polishing pad. The machine also has a handle with a latch which enables the handle to raise the front of the machine when it is to be transported and the handle is in an upright, transporting, position. However, the latch will not enable the handle to place additional pressure on the rotating pad when the machine is operating and the handle is in a slanted, operating position.
