    • A temperature control system for a forehearth, said forehearth for thermally conditioning molten glass to be fed to a glassware forming machine, and being divided into a plurality of zones. Each of the forehearth zones is provided with devices for monitoring the temperature of molten glass within the zone, and apparatus for selectively heating the glass. A microprocessor-based time sharing system controls the temperature of the plurality of zones, using adaptive control loops. Each zone is assigned a time period for monitoring temperature and taking appropriate corrective action. Temperature adjustments may be made independently zone-by-zone, or in cooperation, and other physical parameters may be taken into account such as glass viscosity or combustion pressure. Certain time-sharing periods may be associated with monitoring and displaying functions only.

    • A parison transferring device for use in transferring glass parisons from a parison forming mold to a blow mold. The device comprises gripping members operable to grip or release a parison. The gripping members are movable about a horizontal axis between a gripping position and a releasing position. A cylinder is mounted on a horizontal shaft and has the gripping members mounted thereon. A piston is movable in the cylinder and is screw-threadedly connected to the shaft so that movement along the cylinder causes the piston to rotate about the horizonal axis. A driving connection between the piston and cylinder causes the cylinder to rotate when the piston does so.

    • The method is for monitoring the movement of a member which is moved along a path which has a vertical component and an arcuate component about a vertical axis. The movement is brought about by a piston movable in a cylinder and having a piston rod projecting therefrom on which the member is mounted. A cam which engages a cam track is mounted on the piston rod or a further piston rod of the piston and acts to cause the arcuate movement. The method comprises mounting a proximity detector on the cam track to sense the piston rod, connecting the proximity detector to a contactless connector so that signals are passed from the mechanism to a transmitter of the connector mounted on the machine frame, and comparing signals received by the transmitter with signals indicating the stage reached in the cycle of operation.

    • The mould arrangement is for use in a cyclicly operating glassware forming machine. A plenum chamber, forming part of a bottom plate mechanism on which a bottom plate of the mould is carried, extends beneath a mould of the arrangement and has exits through which cooling air may leave the plenum chamber and enter cooling passages in side portions of the mould when the latter are in a closed position thereof. Air is blown into the plenum chamber for a predetermined period in each cycle of operation of the machine and leaves the plenum chamber through the exits thereby cooling the mould by passing through the passages in the side portions thereof. The air leaving the plenum chamber may first pass through passages in the bottom plate of the mould which communicate with the passages in the side portions.
