    • A method and apparatus for providing the information of adverse drug effects. The method includes: extracting at least a first information and a second information in basic information of a drug from a drug information source; matching the drug with a particular drug-related concept in a structured and normalized terminology system according to the first and the second information; extracting, from the drug information source, the information of Adverse Drug Effects associated with the drug; and matching the information of Adverse Drug Effects with a particular disorder-related concept in the structured and normalized terminology system; wherein the matching is along different paths in at least two disorder-related classified hierarchies. The invention can extract, standardize, and normalize information relating to adverse drug effects to help the integration, search, calculation, and propagation thereof.

    • A system and a method for automatically generating new concepts based on existing ontologies are provided. The system creates new concepts in existing ontologies based on new concept descriptions expressed in a natural language format, and comprises: a normalizer for receiving and parsing the new concept descriptions so as to transform them into normalized one and output them, wherein said normalized concept description includes one or more description part(s) having kernel concepts, said description parts can only contain the terms which can be identified in said existing ontologies, and each of said kernel concept contains a headword and zero or more property(s); and a new concept factory for, based on the normalized description of the new concept, identifying the kernel concepts in each normalized concept description part, and extracting the identified kernel concepts, related properties, and the relations among the kernel concepts for a user to create new concepts according to existing ontologies. Therefore, ontologies will be easier to be managed, reused and expanded, while keeping smaller size and less complexity of the ontologies.

    • A method for achieving interactive browsing includes steps performed by a computer coupled to a knowledge base and a document database. The knowledge base stores a plurality of terms and information relating to each term, and the document database stores a plurality of documents.     • A method and device for optimizing queries over a vertically stored database. Items in the database are partitioned into several partitions each having a partition signature. The method includes decomposing a first query received from a user into multiple first subqueries; generating a signature for each first subquery in a way corresponding to the way of generating the partition signature; comparing the signature of each first subquery with partition signatures of all partitions respectively to obtain all partitions matching the first subquery; rewriting a second subquery translated from the first subquery based on the matching partitions to obtain a rewritten second subquery; and composing rewritten second subqueries for all first subqueries to form a second query so that queries are executed over the database using the second query.

    • The present invention provides a system and method for achieving interactive browsing. Said system is coupled to a knowledge base and a document database, said knowledge base stores a plurality of terms and information relating to each term, and said document database stores a plurality of documents. Said system comprises term acquiring means, for acquiring terms in which a user has much interest; first extracting means, for extracting information relating to the terms in which the user has much interest, from the knowledge base; second extracting means, for extracting documents containing the terms in which the user has much interest, from the document database; a first display part in a user interface, for displaying information extracted by the first extracting means; and a second display part in the user interface, for displaying a list of the documents extracted by the second extracting means. With the present invention, one can browse both documents and information on terms in the documents in a single interface.
