    • A digital signal modulator modulates a digital input signal to drive a load, such as an opposed current amplifier or other opposed current converter. The combinations of frequency relationships and digital signal modulator elements provide significant digital signal processing capabilities and flexible output signal timing. In one embodiment, a digital signal modulator modulates a digital input signal. Even and odd samples of the input signal propagate along two respective channels (signal paths), which include further digital processing capabilities, such as pulse width modulation, to generate output signals appropriate for the topology of a load. Additionally, a bias signal may be modulated with the digital input signal. By utilizing digital signal processing to modulate the input signal, various processing technologies are applied to the input signal. For example, noise shaping may be implemented using a delta-sigma modulator as an input stage to the two channels.

    • An intelligent speaker unit is controlled by control data transmitted with the digital audio data. The intelligent speaker has a Digital Signal Processor (DSP) for processing the audio data in accordance with the control data. The control data contains an address to select the speaker unit. The DSP for the speaker unit processes audio data digitally based on parameters in the control data. The processed digital audio data is then converted to an analog signal which is amplified and applied to the speaker. The digital audio data is time division multiplexed on a TDM bus. Each time slot on the TDM bus contains audio data for one digital audio channel. The control data is placed on the TDM bus as one channel (time slot) or is distributed as control bits through all the other channels. The control data also contains channel select data. Accordingly the DSP in a selected speaker unit may in turn select its audio data from a plurality of audio channels based on the control data the DSP receives. Further, the DSP may mix the selected audio channels by accumulating the audio data from the selected channels. Further, the control data contains audio control data for volume, speaker equalization and sound delay.

    • An audio switching power amplifier having an output with controlled-slope transitions maintains efficiency while avoiding uncontrolled non-overlap intervals during switching transitions. A pair of transistors forming a half-bridge that supplies an output signal at an output terminal of the amplifier are operated so that neither transistor is fully on during an overlap time period. A current source provides an output current to the output terminal during the non-overlap time period to control the output voltage while changing the transistor that conducts the output current from a first one of the pair of transistors to a second one of the pair of transistors. The current source may be provided by operation of one of the transistors in a current source configuration. The voltage of a gate of one of the transistors can be compared with a threshold to provide an indication of the current.

    • Power control systems generate electromagnetic interference (EMI). In at least one embodiment, a power control system includes a switching power converter and a controller that utilizes a spread spectrum strategy to reduce peak EMI values of the power control system. The controller generates a power regulation, switch control signal to control an input voltage to output voltage conversion by the switching power converter. The controller modulates the period of the control signal in accordance with the spread spectrum strategy. The spread spectrum strategy is an intentional plan to spread the spectrum of the control signal to reduce peak EMI values, and, thus, reduce the potential for degradation in performance, a malfunction, or failure of an electronic circuit caused by the EMI. The controller also modulates a pulse width of the switch control signal in response to modulation of the period of the control signal to provide power factor correction.

    • In at least one embodiment, the controller senses a leading edge, phase cut AC input voltage value to a switching power converter during a cycle of the AC input voltage. The controller senses the voltage value at a time prior to a zero crossing of the AC input voltage and utilizes the voltage value to determine the approximate zero crossing. In at least one embodiment, by determining an approximate zero crossing of the AC input voltage, the controller is unaffected by any disturbances of the dimmer that could otherwise make detecting the zero crossing problematic. In at least one embodiment, the controller approximates the AC input voltage using a function that estimates a waveform of the AC input voltage and determines the approximate zero crossing of the AC input voltage from the approximation of the AC input voltage.
