    • An illumination system (8) comprises an optical waveguide (18) which is made from optically transparent components and has four end faces (10, 10′). A light source (12) whose light is coupled into the optical waveguide (18) via one of the end faces (10), is situated opposite this end face (10). The optical waveguide (18) has a light guide (30). A number of fibers (34) are attached to a surface (32) of the light guide (30). The fibers (34) have birefringent properties. A preferred method of providing the birefringent properties is to stretch fibers (34) of a suitable polymer plastic material in their longitudinal direction. The light from the light source (12) will be polarized by the fibers (34) and polarized light will be outcoupled from the optical waveguide (18) via an exit surface (16). The illumination system (8) may be used for front or back lightning of LCD panels for e.g. mobile phones, PDA's, etc.

The phosphor-enhanced lighting 100 device comprises a light source 116, a light exit window 102, a first light conversion element 112 and a second light conversion element 110. The first light conversion element 112 is optically arranged in between the second light conversion element 110 and the light emitting surface 118 of the light source 116.     • The invention relates to a primary light converter (1) for converting primary light (3) into secondary light (4). An electrical light conversion unit (2) converts at least a part of the primary light (3) into the secondary light (4), and an energy converter (5) converts at least a part of the primary light (3) into electrical energy, wherein the electrical light conversion unit (2) is adapted to be driven by the electrical energy from the energy converter (5). The invention relates further to a lighting apparatus comprising one or several of the primary light converters. It is not necessary to electrically connect the one or several primary light converters via a wire to an external power supply. This reduces the space required for the primary light converter and the lighting apparatus and increases the variability of possible arrangements of the one or several primary light converters and lighting systems comprising such primary light converters.
