    • Disclosed is a dispersion compensating optical fiber that includes a core surrounded by a cladding layer of refractive index nCL. The core includes at least three radially adjacent regions, a central core region, a moat region having a refractive index nM that is sufficiently lower than nCL such that &Dgr;M≦−0.4%, and a ring region. As the ring region exhibits sufficiently high refractive index at a sufficiently long distance from the outer edge of the moat region, the fiber can exhibit low values of negative dispersion slope at low values of negative dispersion and yet exhibit good bending loss. This ring region is also capable of imparting to the fiber a relatively high cutoff wavelength, so that the present invention is particularly well suited for use in L-band systems. A particularly suitable fiber has an index profile in which that part of the ring region at the transition between the moat and the ring region has a refractive index such that its delta value is close to zero. Also disclosed is a method of forming the fiber of the present invention.

    • Disclosed is a fiber optic filter that includes a central core, a ring core concentric with the central core, an inner cladding region of refractive index ni between the central and ring cores, and a cladding layer of refractive index nc surrounding the ring core. The maximum refractive index n1 of the central core and the maximum refractive index n2 of the ring core are greater than nc and ni. The propagation constants of one core mode and one ring mode are different at wavelengths except for at least one wavelength &lgr;0 whereby power transfers between the two cores at &lgr;0. At least a portion of the fiber optic filter fiber is wound around a reel to subject it to a continuous curvature, the radius of which determines the amplitude of the attenuation. Such fibers are useful in fiber amplifiers in which the central core contains active dopant ions.

    • A pulse-reshaping optical fiber having a core with refractive index nc surrounded by a cladding layer, the diameter of the core changing monotonically along the length of the fiber. The core includes a central region having a maximum refractive index n1 and a moat region disposed radially adjacent to the central region. The moat region has a minimum refractive index n2 which is sufficiently low that the index delta &Dgr;2 of the moat region with respect to nc is not greater than −0.1%. The moat region affects the change in dispersion with respect to fiber cladding diameter, as well as providing the pulse-reshaping fiber with low dispersion versus wavelength slope. The pulse-reshaping fiber is particularly useful in association with optical transmission systems where high transmission rates and narrow pulse widths are desired, including components such as high pulse rate wavelength-division-multiplexers (WDMs) and optical regenerators.

    • A fiber optic coupler is formed by inserting a plurality of optical fibers into the longitudinal bore of a glass tube so that at least a portion of each fiber extends from at least one end of the tube. The midregion of the tube is collapsed onto the fibers, uncollapsed bore portions remaining at the tube end regions. Each bore portion is connected to the tube end surface by a funnel that facilitates the fiber insertion step. The central portion of the midregion is stretched to reduce the diameter thereof. In a first embodiment, glue is applied to the funnel. Before the glue is cured, a sufficient period of time is allowed to elapse to permit said glue to flow by capillary action between the fibers and the adjacent portion of the wall of the bore portion. The glue flows at least 3 mm into the bore portion beyond the bottom of the funnel. The glue that flows by capillary action fails to completely surround the fibers with glue. The glue is then cured. In a second embodiment, a hollow filament is inserted into the uncollapsed bore portion and a vacuum is applied to the filament. Glue, which is applied to the funnel, is drawn into the uncollapsed bore portion due to the evacuated condition thereof, thus filling the uncollapsed bore portion to the desired level.
