    • An interfacial force microscope includes a differential-capacitance displacement sensor having a tip mounted on an oscillating member. The sensor generates displacement signals in response to oscillations of the member. A scanner is adjacent the sensor and supports a sample to be imaged. The scanner is actuable to move the sample relative to the sensor to bring the tip into intermittent contact with said sample as the member oscillates. A controller is in communication with the sensor and the scanner. The controller includes a sensor feedback circuit receiving the displacement signals and an AC setpoint signal. The AC setpoint signal has a frequency generally equal to the frequency at the peak of the displacement versus frequency curve of the sensor. The output of the sensor feedback circuit is applied to the sensor to oscillate the member. The controller also provides output to the scanner in response to the displacement signals to control the separation distance between the sensor and the sample.

    • The present invention includes a system and method of electronically executing transactions with a preprogrammed main computer having data and image storage and retrieval equipment. A plurality of electronic images of works of art which are for sale are created by at least one listing dealer and stored on the storage equipment associated with the main computer. Data is input about each stored image and input data is associated with each corresponding stored image. A plurality of preprogrammed intelligent terminals each having data storage and retrieval equipment, at least one display screen and at least one input device, located at at least one listing dealer location and at at least one buying dealer location communicate with the main computer. Search criteria are input through the intelligent terminals for selecting at least one of the stored electronic images for review. Selected images and corresponding data are communicated to the intelligent terminals and at least a portion of the selected electronic images are displayed. A reservation on at least one of the displayed electronic images can be made to prevent the completion of a sale transaction involving the artwork corresponding to the selected reserved electronic image. An indication of the reserve status of the work is displayed in conjunction with the display of the reserved work on any of the intelligent terminals. A buy order can be input on the intelligent terminals to transact a purchase of the artwork corresponding to the electronic image subject to the buy order. Instructions to complete the purchase are automatically generated and communicated to the intelligent terminals corresponding to the appropriate listing dealer and the appropriate buying dealer.

    • A method of forming an isolation structure in a semiconductor substrate is described. A trench is first etched into a semiconductor substrate. A first oxide layer is then formed with the trench. The first oxide layer is subjected to a nitrogen-oxide gas ambient and is annealed to form an oxy-nitride surface on the first oxide layer and a silicon-oxynitride interface between the first oxide layer and the semiconductor substrate. A second oxide layer is then deposited over the oxy-nitride surface of the first oxide layer. The method and isolation structure of the present invention prevents dopant outdiffusion, reduces trench stresses, allows more uniform growth of thin gate oxides, and permits the use of thinner gate oxides.

    • A gear drive apparatus includes a first shaft and a second shaft concentric to the first shaft. First and second planetary gear systems are provided for driving the first and second shafts in synchronized rotation with respect to one another with a primary drive input and for selectively driving the first and second shafts in unsynchronized rotation with respect to one another in response to a secondary drive input. Each of the first and second planetary gear systems include a ring gear, a sun gear positioned within the ring gear, and a plurality of planetary gears positioned within the ring gear and between the ring gear and the sun gear. Each ring gear can include inwardly directed gear teeth portions identical to one another. Each plurality of planetary gears can be identical to one another, and each sun gear can be identical to one another. A control mechanism can be provided in communication with the primary and secondary drive inputs for coordinating the primary and secondary drive inputs to selectively produce synchronized and unsynchronized rotation of the first and second shafts with respect to one another. A third planetary gear system can be provided for driving the first shaft longitudinally in response to unsynchronized rotation of the first shaft with respect to a nut connected to a third sun gear operably engaged by the third planetary gear system. A third drive selectively produces synchronized and unsynchronized rotation of the nut with respect to the first shaft.

    • An apparatus and method for performing a sequence of machine operations on connecting rod blanks to convert the blanks from an original casting to a finished product includes loading parts at a beginning of a process stream for performing various machining operations on the parts as the parts travel along the process stream. The process stream is defined at least in part by a first path portion extending between opposing work stations for partially machining the parts, and recirculating the partially machined parts along the process stream into a second path portion. The second path portion extends parallel with the first path portion of the process stream in order to provide generally symmetrically opposing machining operations at the opposing work stations along a portion of the process stream. Lift and carry devices engage and move the raw parts and recirculating parts simultaneously between adjacent opposing work stations in step fashion. The raw parts and the recirculating parts are held in predetermined positions at each work stations within nests in cooperation with reciprocal holding devices to maintain the parts within the nests during the machining operations.
