    • A bar code reading system having a wand that detects variations in light reflected by bars and spaces of the label produces a sequence of corresponding pulses and intervals as the wand scans the label. The entire sequence of pulses and intervals is input to a microprocessor system which produces corresponding digital duration numbers. The microprocessor system computes a reference number for a first character of the label and compares each digital duration number of the character to the reference number to compute a binary number with bits that are a "one" or a "zero" according to whether corresponding digital internal numbers exceed or are less than the reference number. If the number of "ones" in the binary number is too low or too high, the microprocessor decreases or increases the reference time, compares the digital duration number with the adjusted reference number, and re-determines if the resulting value of the binary number has the correct number of "ones". This compensates for variations in scan speed over different characters of the label.

    • A method of providing instruction on the performance of chest compressions includes providing a series of signals of a first type corresponding to the desired rhythm of delivery of chest compressions in a chest compression series, and providing signals of a second type which indicate a desired point in the first series. The desired point may be a point near the end of the chest compression series. The signals of the second type may be a voiced countdown to the end of the compression series. The signals of the first type may be a series of identical sounds delivered in the desired rhythm for chest compressions, and the signals of the second type may be sounds distinct from those of the first type which correspond to the rhythm of the last N compressions in the series. The desired point in the first series may include a first point at a desired interval from the first compression, where the interval is measured in number of compressions or elapsed time. A protocol may be chosen between a protocol for a patient with a secured airway and one for a patient with an unsecured airway.

    • A generally cylindrical shaft seal with an axial opening is disclosed having annular “lips” or “legs” on one or both ends that are separated by a fluid-filled cavity. The seal is adapted to seal between a support or housing holding the seal and a generally cylindrical shaft passing axially through the seal. Fluid, under pressure, may enter the cavity and urge the lips or legs in a radial direction which enhances the sealing engagement of the seal member to the shaft and the housing. In certain embodiments, the seal has a concave inner surface to minimize the contact area (and hence the friction) between the seal and the movable shaft. The outer circumference of the seal may be equipped with one or more O-ring seals for sealing to the housing or support. The seal may be fabricated from natural or synthetic polymers, metal or composite materials.

    • A method of characterizing a nucleic acid molecule is disclosed. The method comprises synthesizing DNA in the presence of a reaction mixture comprising a nucleic acid template, a primer molecule, an enzyme that extends the primer so that a DNA molecule may be synthesized, four canonical deoxynucleoside triphosphates and at least one non-canonical deoxynucleoside triphosphate. The non-canonical deoxynucleoside triphosphate is incorporated into the synthesized DNA in place of a portion of only one canonical deoxynucleoside triphosphate. The synthesized DNA is treated with an N-glycosylase that excises a base portion of the non-canonical deoxynucleoside triphosphate from the synthesized DNA. The DNA is then treated in such a manner that the phosphodiester backbone of the DNA is broken at the abasic site, thus creating at least two DNA fragments. The fragments are separated according to size.
