    • A smart chip protection system contains a unique public/private identity key pair and uses a separate public/private signature key pair. The internally stored identity private key can not be read outside the chip. An issuing entity generates a descriptor containing the identity public key, attribute data, and a digital signature of the two, using a signature private key known only to the issuer. The authenticity of the descriptor is verified by decrypting the signature using the signature public key, and comparing the result to source data. An object's identity can be verified by requesting the smart chip to perform a data transformation using its identity private key, and performing the complement using the public key. An exemplary embodiment is a cellular telephone, in which a service provider verifies identity of the telephone and correct signature as a condition to providing service.

    • In a stabilized laser system, a signal is to be generated at an output thereof having a desired central wavelength. At least one laser, which, while emitting light and having a preselected portion thereof fed back thereto, causes the output signal of the at least one laser source to be shifted in wavelength in a first direction which is spaced apart from the center wavelength of the fed back signal. A feedback generating arrangement is coupled to the at least one laser to process a first portion of the output signal from the at least one laser and generate a feedback signal having a spectral response peaking at a wavelength shifted in an opposite direction to the first direction generated by at least one laser. The feedback signal that is shifted in the opposite direction causes the at least one laser to provide an output signal at the output of the stabilized laser system having a spectral response that peaks essentially at the desired wavelength.

In another aspect, the loading effects of high fanout are minimized by using a plurality of tapping buffers to couple lines to both core routing and to I/O circuitry. In another aspect, a spiraling technique is provided that allows a continuous bus having line segments of consistent length whether or not the number of I/O blocks is an integral multiple of the selected logical length for line segments.
