The read head comprises a magnetoresistive (MR) sensor that reads information from a read track of the magnetic storage medium. First and second shields have a length greater than two tracks in a track width direction and define a gap therebetween, wherein the MR sensor is arranged in the gap. Inner magnetic portions of the first and second shields are spaced a first distance from the read track. Outer magnetic portions of the first and second shields are spaced a second distance from adjacent tracks to the read track, wherein the first distance is less than the second distance.

    • An automatic tool changer in which the load produced when a turret is rotation-driven is reduced, and abrasion in the balls and the like of a speed reducer, and mal-distribution of an axial pressing force are prevented. The speed reducer that drives the turret in the automatic tool changer is constructed by superposing a driving plate, a holder, and a driven plate in the order named. In the driven plate fitted with tools, there is formed a ball groove in a concave-convex shape having the number of cycles corresponding to the number of the tools. In the driving plate, there is provided a ball groove obtained by enlarging the ball groove of the driven plate in the angular direction and copying two cycles. The holder is provided with a plurality of guide holes in the radial direction, which hold their respective balls. The driving plate is rotated by spindle rotation, and the driven plate is driven at a reduced speed of (the number of tools/2) through the balls. It is possible to reduce the load by setting the ball groove of the driven plate at the optimum pressure angle. The balls are dispersed, so that the axial pressure is even, to thereby reduce the abrasion of the balls and ball grooves, and the like.

    • There is provided a timing generator that outputs a second periodic signal having a desired phase difference to a first periodic signal by superimposing a voltage on a control voltage of a voltage-controlled oscillating unit of a PLL circuit for generating the second periodic signal. The timing generator includes an initializing unit for measuring a timing shift gain indicative of a ratio of a timing shift amount to a change of a superimposed voltage and a voltage generating unit for generating the superimposed voltage based on the desired phase difference and the timing shift gain. The initializing unit harmonizes the phase of the first periodic signal with the phase of the second periodic signal, sequentially changes the superimposed voltage, detects an amount of change of the superimposed voltage when the phase of the first periodic signal and the phase of the second periodic signal are identical with each other once more, and computes a timing shift gain based on the change amount of the superimposed voltage and an amount of change of the phase of the second periodic signal.

    • An automatic tool changing device capable of cleaning a contact surface of a spindle, which is to be in contact with a tool holder, with a simple structure. The device includes a turret having a plurality of grippers on its outer circumference and holding the tool holder by means of the grippers. At the time of tool change, the grippers grip and pull out the tool holder fixed to the spindle. Rotation of the spindle causes the turret to rotate through a spindle gear, a turret gear, and a decelerating device, to thereby select a tool. At this moment, a coolant is spouted from a nozzle portion of a manifold toward a spindle taper hole in which the tool holder is interfitted and washes the taper hole. Due to the rotation of the spindle, the coolant is spouted onto the whole circumference of the taper hole, and the surface to be in contact with the tool holder is surely washed. Therefore, it is possible to perform the cleaning with a simple structure in which the nozzle portion is arranged near the spindle without machining the spindle and the tool holder.
