    • The subject invention concerns N-thiolated β-lactam compounds of formula A, wherein R1is a hydrocarbon group having 1-8 carbon atoms; R3 is an organothio group; and R4 is alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, heteroaryl, cycloalkyl, heterocycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl, or heterocycloalkenyl, and analogs and pharmaceutically acceptable salts, esters and amides thereof. The subject invention also concerns methods for inducing tumor cell death or inhibiting tumor cell proliferation, and methods for inducing DNA damage, inhibiting DNA replication, activating p38 MAP kinase, or activating caspase cascade activation, or releasing cytochrome C from mitochondria into the cytoplasm in a tumor cell. Methods for treating cancer using N-thiolated β-lactam compounds, as well as pharmaceutical compositions comprising the same are further disclosed.

    • The invention is a system and method to log a wellbore, comprising a logging tool including a downhole power source to power the data transmission and logging tool, the logging tool adapted to be deployed in a wellbore environment, the logging tool taking at least one measurement of the wellbore environment, a fiber optic line in optical communication with the logging tool, and the logging tool transmitting the measurements on a real time basis through the fiber optic line to surface and converting the data at surface back into electrical data and processing the data at surface into a real time display of the data. In one embodiment, a continuous tube with one end at the earth's surface and the other end in the wellbore is attached to the logging tool and includes the fiber optic line disposed therein.

    • Methods of rendering an object-based image are described. The methods receive a list of objects (951-955) in the image (950), the list ordering the objects in priority order from a lowest-priority object (951) to a highest-priority object (955). The objects are assigned to a first set of objects (951, 952) and/or a second set of objects (953-955). The first set of objects is rendered to an image store using a first rendering method that only renders a portion of an object if the portion is visible in the first set of objects and the second set of objects is rendered to the image store using a second rendering method that renders each object independently of the other objects in the second set. The assignment may be based on a priority order of a highest-compositing object (952). The assignment may be based on a group of overlapping objects (1101, 1102, 1103, 1105), where an object (1105) in the group requires compositing.
