摘要： A method for operating a surgical instrument includes mechanically coupling a manual release to a transmission of a surgical instrument having a self-contained power supply disposed entirely within a handle thereof. The transmission translates movement of an electrically powered motor inside the handle to movement of a part of a surgical end effector connected to the handle. The part is operable to move anywhere between a start position and a fully actuated position. The method further includes selectively interrupting the transmission with the manual release to move the part towards the start position independent of motor operation.

摘要： A highly flexible cable includes two, and preferably three or more strands of nickel-titanium alloy wire which are twined (twisted) to form a wire rope. The nickel-titanium alloy wire rope is drawn through successive dies to reduce its diameter until the outer surface of the cable is substantially smooth, the cross section of the cable is substantially circular, and the overall diameter of the wire rope is reduced by 20-50%. The cable is then annealed to remove the effects of cold working. The resulting cable has been found to have an improved flexibility (i.e., a lower modulus of elasticity) relative to single strand nickel-titanium wires of the same diameter.

摘要： An actuator for a laparoscopic surgical instrument imparts reciprocal motion to a push rod surrounded by a hollow tube. The actuator includes a plastic housing which fixedly engages the hollow tube, and a lever which fixedly engages the push rod and pivotally engages the housing. The housing also preferably includes an integral handle. When the handle and lever are manipulated by the user such as by pivotal movement of the lever, reciprocal motion is imparted to the push rod relative to the hollow tube. The lever also includes an external unevenly surfaced portion which when frictionally engaged by a digit of a human hand will impart pivotal motion to the lever, and hence reciprocal motion to the push rod.

Each connecting element engages a reciprocally movable push rod having a first through-hole and a pivotally rotatable end effector having a second through-hole. The connecting element is preferably a resilient staple-like element having a first terminal portion configured to pivotally engage the first through-hole in the push rod, an oppositely extending second terminal portion configured to pivotally engage the second through-hole in the end effector, and a substantially U-shaped middle portion coupling the first and second terminal portions. Where a double acting surgical instrument is used, two connecting elements are required. For improved stability, the connecting elements of the double acting surgical instrument can be crossed.
