    • A magnetic head support mechanism comprises: a magnetic head for writing and reading data relative to a magnetic disk; a slider having a flying surface for flying over a surface of the magnetic disk, the slider having the magnetic head mounted thereon; a mounting portion on which the slider is mounted; a transverse frame connected to one end of the mounting portion; two flexible finger portions which extend respectively from opposite ends of the transverse frame, and are disposed respectively on opposite sides of the mounting portion; a beam portion connected at one end thereof to ends of the flexible finger portions; a spring portion connected at one end thereof to the other end of the beam portion; an arm mounting portion connected to the other end of the spring portion; and a slider posture control mechanism connecting a reverse surface of the slider at an air inflow-side end thereof to the beam portion.

    • A structure for supporting a magnetic head slider for a linear magnetic disk unit comprises: a magnetic head slider having air bearing rails located opposite to a magnetic disk so as to extend in a direction of a track of the magnetic disk; a gimbal for elastically supporting the magnetic head slider, the gimbal being bonded to a back surface of the magnetic head slider on a side reverse to the air bearing rail; and a support arm having the gimbal secured to its distal end, whose axis extends in a direction perpendicular to the air bearing rail, which support arm gives the magnetic head slider a pressing force toward the magnetic disk. The gimbal includes: a substantially rectangular joining portion to be bonded to the back surface of the magnetic head slider, the joining portion having longer sides extending in a direction perpendicular to the axis of the support arm and shorter sides extending in the axial direction of the support arm; a bridging portion to be bonded to the back face of the magnetic head slider, the bridging portion extending from a middle portion of the lower side of the joining portion on the opposite side to the support arm outwardly in the axial direction of the support arm; flexible portions extending from the bridging portion so as to surround the bridging portion and the joining portion; and a support portion extending from the flexible portions on the opposite side to the bridging portion rearward in the axial direction of the support arm.

    • Embodiments of the invention provide a magnetic disk device which improves the shielding function for the magnetic heads while maintaining a form factor having an inexpensive constitution. In one embodiment, a magnetic disk device comprises a rotary disk-type magnetic disk; a magnetic head for recording or reproducing information; a magnetic head support mechanism for supporting the magnetic head; a shroud having an opening in which the magnetic head support mechanism is inserted, and surrounding the outer circumference of the magnetic disk; and a housing. The housing includes a base and a cover, and accommodates the magnetic disk, the magnetic head, the magnetic head support mechanism and the shroud. The base is constituted by using a nonmagnetic material and the shroud is constituted by using a magnetic material.

    • In a magnetic disk apparatus, a function of shielding a magnetic head is improved while maintaining the form factor with an inexpensive structure. In one embodiment, a magnetic disk apparatus has a magnetic disk, a magnetic head that records or plays back information, a magnetic head support mechanism supporting the magnetic head, a positioning mechanism that moves the magnetic head in a radial direction of the magnetic disk to place the head in position, an enclosure made of a nonmagnetic material, and a shield member made of a magnetic material. The magnetic disk, magnetic head, magnetic head support mechanism, positioning mechanism, and shield member are housed in the enclosure. The shield member has an upper shield located above the magnetic head and extending over the range of movement of the magnetic head, a lower shield located on the opposite side of the surface where the magnetic head exists and extending over the range of movement of the magnetic head, and a connecting portion connecting an outer side end portion of the upper shield and an outer side end portion of the lower shield near the outer fringes of the magnetic disk.
