    • A spool of a lock-up control valve has a first effective area exposed to a release pressure which is supplied to a release chamber of the lock-up clutch and a second larger effective area which is exposed to the apply pressure which is supplied to an apply chamber. When acceleration is demanded when the lock-up clutch is in one of slip or fully lock-up modes and a sudden demand for acceleration is made, the pressure differential between the apply and release pressures is reduced below the normal level for a predetermined period of time.

    • An automatic transmission for use with an automotive vehicle having an engine provided with an output shaft, and a differential. The automatic transmission comprises a casing, and first, second and third shafts arranged in the casing. The first shaft is concentrical with the engine output shaft. The second shaft is parallel with the first shaft. The third shaft is concentrical with the second shaft. The third shaft is connected to the differential. A first transfer gear train is provided for transmitting rotation from the first shaft to the second shaft. The automatic transmission also comprises a main transmission unit including planetary gearing having rotary members for providing a plurality of torque delivery paths between the second and third shafts, and friction elements associated with the planetary gearing for selecting one of the torque delivery paths in response to a selected gear position. The planetary gearing is provided on the second shaft. An equivalent rotary member is provided on the first shaft. The equivalent rotary member is equivalent to one of the rotary members. The friction elements includes a first friction element through which the equivalent rotary member is connected to the first shaft and a second friction element through which the equivalent rotary member is connected to the casing. A second transfer gear train is provided for transmitting rotation from the one rotary member to the equivalent rotary member.

    • A control system for an automatic power transmission for an automotive vehicle performs line pressure control, shift control, lock-up control, engine brake clutch control, and so forth, on the basis of preselected engine control, parameters including a throttle valve open angle monitored by a throttle angle sensor. The control system is designed to detect failure of the throttle angle sensor or abnormality of the output signal of the throttle angle sensor to perform in a fail-safe mode of operation. In the fail-safe mode of operation, respective ones of a plurality of mutually distinct back-up signals serve as replacement of the throttle angle sensor signal. Each of the back-up signals is adapted to one of line pressure control, shift control, lock-up control, and engine braking clutch control for maintaining acceptable drivability of the vehicle.

    • In a method of controlling a duty-cycle type solenoid valve having a valve body that is driven at a controlled duty ratio and a valve seat on which the valve body rests when the solenoid valve is closed, an additional pulse is applied to the solenoid valve upon a lapse of a predetermined time from an ON/OFF switching point at which a level of a driving pulse is changed to drive the valve body in a direction to close the solenoid valve, so as to reduce the speed of the valve body when resting on the valve seat. The additional pulse has the same phase as the driving pulse applied before the ON/OFF switching point, and has a pulse width that is smaller than that of the driving pulse having the same phase. An apparatus for controlling a duty-cycle type solenoid valve is also provided which includes a driving pulse generating device for generating the driving pulse to the duty-cycle type solenoid valve at a predetermined duty ratio, and an additional pulse generating device for generating the additional pulse to the duty-cycle type solenoid valve upon a lapse of a predetermined time from the ON/OFF switching point of the driving pulse generated by the driving pulse generating device.
