    • An optical identification friend-or-foe (IFF) system for vehicles comprises a Selective Wavelength IFF (SWIFF) system with a tunable optical beacon being located on each similarly equipped vehicle. That tunable optical beacon includes a light source and wavelength encoder which can select a number of narrow-band optical wavelengths for emission from the beacon, those selected wavelengths forming an identification code for a vehicle. The optical beacon directs the selected wavelengths along an optical path to a diffuser which can irradiate a wide field-of-view around the vehicle with those selected wavelength for detection and identification by other friendly vehicles. The light source may be one that emits a broad range of wavelengths with the encoder providing a number of narrow-band optical filters which can be selectively positioned in the optical path from the light source to the diffuser. Alternatively, the light source and encoder could be a wavelength agile laser source or an array of laser diodes emitting at specific wavelengths and a control unit to select the wavelengths emitted by the laser source or array of diodes. This optical SWIFF system provides a high level of covertness and degree of confidence in the identification of vehicles as being friend-or-foe.

    • A write protect device for a computer comprising a hardware circuit with a switch connected to an internally installed circuit card which has cable connections between data storage device drives and a drive controller cable, the circuit card intercepting control lines used for drive selection and control. The switch is connected to inputs of a latch circuit which, in one position of the switch, generates *READONLY and READONLY signals at outputs of the latch circuit and, in a second position, *DISABLE and DISABLE signals at other outputs. To enter a read only mode, the circuit card includes an inverter and a NAND gate in a *WRITE GATE line to the data storage device drives with one input of the NAND gate being connected to the *READONLY line from the latch circuit which will prevent any *WRITE GATE signal from reaching the data storage device drives when the *READONLY line is activated. A further inverter and a NAND gate intercepts a *DRIVE SEL line to the data storage device drives with the NAND gate having one input connected to the *DISABLE line from the latch circuit. When the *DISABLE line is activated to enter a disable mode, that NAND gate will prevent any *DRIVE SEL signal from reaching an associated data storage device drive. A number of internal optional links and NAND gates on the circuit card can create further selectable operational features.

    • A sensor for resolving the left-right ambiguity encountered in horizontal line hydrophone arrays consists of an orthogonal pair of dipole hydrophones, a monopole hydrophone, and a tilt sensor, the tilt sensor connecting the dipole hydrophones so as to provide a single dipole hydrophone which is always oriented horizontally. The tilt sensor consists of two variable capacitors made from hollow cylinders of high permittivity dielectric material, partially filled with a quantity of liquid mercury which forms the variable inner electrodes of the capacitors. The outer electrodes of the capacitors, on the outside of the cylinders, having a sinusoidally-shaped perimeter and being oriented at right angles to each other, are connected to the crossed dipoles in order to provide the required horizontal dipole hydrophone.

    • A fibre optic magnetic sensor is disclosed. The sensor has a thin-walled cylindrical barrel with a mid-section which is elastically radially deformable. A single mode optical fibre is wound about the mid section of the barrel. A magnetostrictive element is located within the center of the barrel and secured to both ends of the barrel. Changes in the external magnetic field in the vicinity of the sensor cause changes in the length of the magnetostrictive element and consequently cause axial forces to be applied to the end of the barrel. The mid-portion of the barrel deforms radially, thus inducing a strain in the optical fibre from which the external magnetic field strength may be deduced.
