    • Indicator inks, indicators formed by printing or otherwise utilizing the inks and host products utilizing the indicators are disclosed. Reactivity-enhancing adjuvants stimulate enhanced thermal reactivity of diacetylenic or other indicator agents capable of responding to ambient thermal conditions with a visual change signaling an end point. The diacetylenic or other agents may be sensitive or relatively insensitive to ambient temperatures. Use of a reactivity-enhancing adjuvant provides a useful means for adapting the reactivities of indicator agents to the response characteristics of prospective host products, for example perishables such as vaccines or fresh fish and maturables such as fruit, cheese and wine. Some exemplary adjuvants include low-temperature polymerization initiators, for example methyl ethyl ketone peroxide and polymerization accelerators, for example cobalt compounds. Such initiators and accelerators can also be used in combination.

    • A 1,4-di-substituted diacetylene polymer that is soluble in organic solvent, is composed of a repeating unit represented by the general formula ═CR—C≡C—CR′═ (wherein, R and R′ represent identical or different monovalent organic substituents), and has an average degree of polymerization of 4 to 200 and a ratio (Mw/Mn) of weight average molecular weight (Mw) to number average molecular weight corresponding to said average degree of polymerization (Mn) of 1.1 to 5.0, and a process for producing the 1,4-di-substituted diacetylene polymer by irradiating a solution of the soluble 1,4-di-substituted diacetylene polymer with laser light having a wavelength within the range of 250 to 1,200 nm, and preferably 550 to 900 nm, to cause a photodegradation reaction of said polymer, or heating a solution of the soluble 1,4-di-substituted diacetylene polymer to a temperature of 100 to 300° C. to cause thermal degradation of said polymer; and 1,4-di-substituted diacetylene polymers for which the average degree of polymerization and molecular weight distribution are controlled to within predetermined ranges, a production process that enables that control, useful composite compositions based on the 1,4-di-substituted diacetylene polymers, and constitutions of materials in which said composite compositions are used.

    • Highly effective polarizers are described having a degree of polarization P of at least 95% and a dichroic ratio Q.sub.E =quotient of the extinction in the blocking position to the extinction in the transmitting position, of 10 or more over almost the whole wavelength range of visible light between 400 and 800 nm, the said polarizers comprising polymer products containing polyacetylene, in whose matrix 70 to 90% of all comonomer units are vinyl alcohol units. The polarizers are used in the form of films with a stretch ratio ##EQU1## (1=length after stretching, l.sub.o =length before stretching) of more than 300%. They can be produced by polymerization of acetylene in the solution of a copolymer in which 70 to 90% of all comonomer units are vinyl alcohol units, in the presence of a nickel catalyst.
