摘要： A signature handling apparatus includes a plurality of saddles and a plurality of signature openers. Each signature opener is associated with a respective saddle. The signature openers move together with the saddles in a first direction along an endless path past a signature feeding mechanism with the saddles extending transversely to the first direction. Each signature opener opens one respective signature as the signature opener moves past the signature feeding mechanism to enable positioning of the one signature in an opened condition on the saddle associated with the signature opener.

A sheet feeder disposed to convey the inset products approximately perpendicular to a conveying direction of the insetting machine is provided. Above the pockets a conveyor segment ends that is disposed downstream of the sheet feeder. The conveyor segment is formed by two endless adjacent flat belts and conveys the inset products from the sheet feeder to the pockets of the insetting machine. The inset products are grasped between respective conveying surfaces of the flat belts. Deflector rollers circulate the flat belts.

摘要： A method and apparatus for assembling newspapers which have a jacket and a plurality of inserts within the jacket are disclosed. The apparatus includes a circular array of stations and a rotor carrying a plurality of pockets which move below the stations. A two-speed transmission is provided so that the rotor can be driven at either of two speeds. At each station there is a hopper for feeding a jacket or insert into the pockets as they move below. The jacket feeding stations are grouped into a group of two or more adjacent stations. The insert feeding stations are likewise grouped into groups of adjacent stations having two or more in each group. All groups have the same number of stations and the stations in each group all feed an identical jacket or insert. In addition there is a single opener station for opening jackets before inserts are fed into the jackets and a single delivery station for each group of jacket feeding stations. In one embodiment each group includes two stations. There is a single opener station and a single delivery station. The rotor is provided with a plurality of groups of pockets.

摘要： A method and apparatus for tipping an insert onto a signature being moved by the main conveyor of a collating system. An insert is removed from a standard hopper of the collating system and is directed into a position to be moved by an auxiliary conveyor in timed relationship to the movement of a signature by the main conveyor. The auxiliary conveyor moves the insert in a proper spaced relationship to the signature being moved by the main conveyor. As the signature is moved past an adhesive applying station, adhesive is applied to the signature and the auxiliary conveyor then brings the insert into juxtaposition with the moving signature. According to the preferred embodiment, pressure is applied to the signature and insert shortly after they are brought into juxtaposition with each other to promote adherence of the insert to the signature.
