    • A structural member which comprises a pair of hollow end sections and an intermediate web characterized in that each hollow end section is welded to the intermediate web so as to form two weld lines or joins extending along the structural member. Suitably the intermediate web is predominantly planar and the structural member is formed from a unitary sheet of metal having opposed edges whereby a respective edge is located adjacent the intermediate web and is welded thereto form the weld lines or weld joins.The invention also includes within its scope a process for forming the structural member including the following steps:(i) passing substantially planar metal strip through a plurality of forming stations to successively deform opposed free edges of the metal strip so as to provide a pair of substantially hollow end sections wherein a respective free edge is located adjacent to an intermediate web interposed between each substantially hollow end section; and(ii) welding the respective free edge to the intermediate web to form two weld lines or joins extending along the structural member.

    • A hollow, tubular beam is formed of an outer and an inner, U-shaped, elongated, roll-formed, sheet metal channel which are telescopically interfitted. The overlapping adjacent leg portions of each channel are provided with an inwardly bent rib and groove mechanical connection, but the curvature of the adjacent rib and groove surfaces are slightly different to provide a number of longitudinally extending, separated spaces therebetween. The free edge of one of the legs of the outer channel is bent normally to cover a corresponding corner-like shoulder bent in the adjacent inner channel leg. The radii of the flange and shoulder bends are slightly different to provide a slight, longitudinally extending space between them. Also, overlapping leg portions are spaced apart by integral embossments formed on the legs. The adjacent channel legs are adhesively bonded together by an adhesive material applied within the spaces.

    • An elongated beam is constructed from a sheet metal panel and has upper and lower flange sections integrally connected by a web section. The web section has upper and lower inclined web portions which project in opposite directions from a vertical intermediate web portion and cooperate to provide the beam with a generally Z-shaped cross-sectional configuration to facilitate stacking of a plurality of beams in interfitting nested relation. The upper and lower flange sections are stiffened by members which may be longitudinally extending sheet metal strips or longitudinally spaced stiffening elements, and the upper and lower flange sections and adjacent portions of the web section are formed slightly different in size to permit interfitting of mating overlapping end portions of two longitudinally aligned beams after one beam is inverted relative to the other.
