摘要： A process for the preparation of 1-methylpiperazine and 1,4-dimethylpiperazine as co-products is disclosed which provides a crude reaction product free of piperazine impurity. The process of the invention comprises mixing and reacting formaldehyde and piperazine at a molar ratio of more than 1.3 to less than about 2.0 and then hydrogenating the resulting reaction product carried in methanol as a major solvent in liquid phase at a temperature of about 60.degree.-130.degree.C. in the presence of a nickel or cobalt hydrogenation catalyst. The crude hydrogenated reaction product is free from piperazine impurity from which 1-methylpiperazine and 1,4-dimethylpiperazine can be readily separated in substantially pure form such as by simple fractional distillation.

摘要： A method for the N-dealkylation of tertiary amines which involves replacing an N-alkyl group of the tertiary amine with a vinyloxycarbonyl group by reaction with, for example, vinyl chloroformate to form a vinyloxycarbonyl amide, followed by cleavage with, for example, a mild acid to split off the vinyloxycarbonyl group and obtain the secondary amine. Such tertiary amines also containing alcoholic or phenolic hydroxyl groups can simultaneously be provided with hydroxyl group protection by formation of vinyloxycarbonyl ester groups which are stable under the mild acid cleavage conditions and which are removable with base or strong acid. The method has particular use in the syntheses of various tertiary amine compounds involving replacement of an alkyl group in a starting tertiary amine replacement of an alkyl group in a starting tertiary amine with another N-substituent.

摘要： A supported catalyst containing ruthenium and another platinum group metal are used to hydrogenate organic compounds, numerous examples of which are given. Specified supports are C, Al2O3, SiO2, Kieselguhr, silicon gel, TiO2, CoCO3, BaSO4 and bentonite. Specified other platinum group metals are Pt, Pd and Rh. The ruthenium may be present in the catalyst as the oxide or alternatively (having been reduced) as the metal itself. Examples are given. Compounds which may be hydrogenated include benzene, toluene, xylene, naphthalene, and anthracene.ALSO:In a process for hydrogenating a compound selected from carboxylic aromatic, heterocyclic aromatic, aliphatic nitro, aromatic nitro, nitrile, acetylenic diol, phenols, alkoxybenzenes, aromatic carboxylic acids, amines, hydroxyl amines, oximes and imines, the compound is contacted with a supported catalyst containing ruthenium and another platinum group metal.
