    • A method and apparatus for splicing at least two single or multiple layer materials of air permeable soft paper webs while retaining web tension during operation. The apparatus includes a first suction chamber for retaining an end portion of a new web in trailing engagement against a first web, which is to be spliced, a second suction chamber over which moves the first web, which is to be spliced, as well as the forward end portion of the new web for splicing, a regulatable vacuum system for the suction chambers, an embossing nip placed downstream of the second suction chamber for bonding together the webs kept together with the aid of controlled air passage through them, and a cutting means for cutting off the moving web. Splicing takes place by vacuum in both suction chambers arranged at the webs for entraining the end portion of the new web to the first web which is to be spliced in the embossing nip, where bonding of both material webs takes place such as to form a reliable splice, subsequent to which the moving web is cut off for completing the splicing operation.

    • A method and apparatus for facilitating a splicer operator's pre-splice preparation and positioning of the leading end of a new web for splicing, in a splicer, to the running web of an expiring roll. The webs both include regular and longitudinally spaced registration marks and identical, repeating and longitudinally spaced patterns.A movable table is used for the initial, off line, pre-splice web preparations. It includes a fixture for guiding the leading end of the new web along a longitudinal path and a hole puncher adjacent to the path. An optical instrument is also mounted on the table and is movable transversely across the path. The optical instrument is spaced longitudinally a preselected distance from the hole puncher. The operator moves the new web along and the optical instrument across the path until a registration mark is aligned beneath the optical instrument. The operator then punches holes in the new web using the hole puncher. The leading end of the web is next introduced into the splicer and the web holes are placed over splicer locating pins mounted a preselected distance from a splicing reference position. An optical sensor is disposed a predetermined distance from the reference position and initiates the web splicing by signaling the passage of a registration mark on the running web.

    • According to the invention, an apparatus is provided for feeding a continuous plastic film from a source of supply to a plastic film processing machine such as a plastic bag making machine and the like, which includes first and second take up rolls for taking up and rewinding the plastic film. First guide means is disposed at a position in the path for directing the plastic film from the source of supply to the first take up roll via the first guide means. Second guide means is disposed downstream of the first guide means in the path for directing the plastic film from the second take up roll to the processing machine via the second guide means. The plastic films can be sandwiched between and heat cut widthwise by first heat cutting means and first receiving means, whereby the plastic film from the source of supply is connected to the plastic film to the processing machine, while the plastic film to the first take up roll is connected to the plastic film from the second take up roll. The plastic film can be sandwiched between and heat cut widthwise by the second heat cutting means and the second receiving means, whereby the plastic film from the source of supply is connected to the plastic film to the first take up roll, while the plastic film from the second take up roll is connected to the plastic film to the processing machine.
