    • An apparatus for final assembly of framed artwork includes a conveyor for translating a plurality of art frames past a robot arm assembly. A fastener driver module is supported by the robot arm assembly, the module including a support plate and a magazine secured to the support plate by a pivot assembly at the upper end of the magazine, with the freely pivoting lower end of the magazine depending from the support plate. A pneumatic actuator extends laterally from the support plate to rotate the lower end of the magazine to impinge on the art frame, and another pneumatic actuator supported on the magazine is coupled through a lever arrangement to a driver blade extending through the lower end of the magazine. The driver blade engages the lowermost fastener in the magazine and ejects it forcefully, driving it into the interior opening of the frame on the table. A computer control system is connected to the robot arm assembly to move the fastener driver module to engage each art frame passing thereby, and to drive fasteners into the rails of each frame and secure the artwork therein. A speed sensor coupled to the conveyor generates a speed signal that is received by the computer control system, whereby the robot arm may be driven in translational synchronism with each passing art frame.

    • An underpinning machine includes a worktable (11) having a central recess (17) housing one or a pair of underpinning heads (20,21; 120). The or each head has a magazine (18,19) of V-nails or wedges associated with it. In a single head version, the underpinning head (120) is power driven between two stop positions and is capable of operation by a drive plate (27) power operated (28,29) from spaced pneumatic rams disposed below the worktable. In another embodiment, two underpinning heads (20,21) are both selectively positionable within the area of the drive plate (27). The operation of the drive plate therefore automatically operates the underpinning heads whatever their position relative to fixed guides (31,32) of the apparatus which locate framing members (42) to be underpinned. By having the underpinning head indirectly actuated by the drive plate (27), a compact and flexible apparatus is provided and in the twin head version the underpinning heads can be placed very close together since there is no interference between respective drive mechanisms.

    • A machine (20) forming of pallets by affixing deck boards (52) to two or more stringers (50). The apparatus includes a base (22) defining a bed which has input and output sections. An inverter (28) is pivotally mounted to the base (22) for pivotal movement between a first position, overlying the input section, and a second position, overlying the output section. With the inverter (28) in its first position, a pallet is partially formed by affixing a plurality of deck boards (52) to first sides of two or more stringers (50) while those pallet components (50, 52) are held within fittings (56, 62, 64, 66, 68) carried by the inverter (28). Affixation is effected by a tower (86), having a plurality of nailer guns (100), moving across the inverter (28). With the pallet thus partially formed, the inverter (28) pivots to its second position to deposit the partially formed pallet into the output section at which the partially formed pallet and deck boards (52) to be affixed to the other sides of the stringers (50) are held in position by various fittings (74, 78, 80, 82). As the deck boards (52) are applied to the stringers (50) in the output section, deck boards (52) and stringers (50) are positioned within various fittings carried by the inverter (28), which has been returned to its first position. With the pallet components positioned in the input and output sections of the apparatus (20), the tower (86) is, again, caused to be moved across the apparatus (20) to effect nailing of the various deck boards (52) to the stringers (50). Pallets are continued to be assembled in this fashion as desired.

    • In a railroad spike driving machine, the spike driving mechanism is centered over a spike by a system which provides simultaneous proportional control over both the vertical and horizontal positions of the spike driver. The driver is mounted on a carriage whose position is adjustable according to signals derived from the deflection of a control arm. Strain gauges mounted on the control arm sense the push or pull of the operator to adjust the carriage position. The speed of the drive stroke of the hydraulic spike driver is governed by a proportional control valve which is in turn controlled by a signal generated from a trigger switch on the control arm.

    • An improved clip attachment apparatus includes a main drive cylinder operative to drive a punch against a clip. A mechanical linkage also connects the drive cylinder with a gate. Operation of the main drive cylinder simultaneously closes the gate to form the punch channel and drives the punch. The mechanical linkage includes a lost motion feature to insure that the gate will be closed prior to attachment of the clip around material gathered at the lower end of the punch channel. An improved knife for cutting the clipped material and an improved pneumatic circuit for sequentially controlling the drive cylinder and the knife cylinder are disclosed. Finally, an adjustable trigger mechanism for initiating operation of the clipper is disclosed.
