    • The invention relates to a setting device for an auxiliary joining part, particularly a setting fastener or a punch rivet, including a driven punch which for a setting movement can be moved in a joining channel to which the auxiliary joining part can be loosely fed. The setting device includes a head piece in which a part of the joining channel runs, further including a plurality of compressed air ducts ending in the joining channel, and an exhaust air channel. The exhaust air channel ends adjacent to the front side of the punch moving the auxiliary joining part into the joining channel of the setting device such that an airflow can be generated in the joining channel in the direction of the front of the punch moving the auxiliary joining part by way of an overpressure which can be generated in the plurality of compressed air channels compared to the atmospheric pressure and by which the auxiliary joining part can be positioned on the front side of the punch.

    • A machine for fastening rail plates to cross-ties, utilizing spikes or the like, and method therefore, is disclosed in the present invention. The preferred apparatus of the present invention teaches a system wherein there is provided a conveyor for conveying a plurality of laterally arranged, aligned ties, a loader for loading a single tie upon a template conveyer, and a positioner for positioning a tie at each station during the pre-plating process. The present invention further includes a template system for securing the cross-tie or tie in place, feeding and positioning the rail-plate in place, feeding, dispensing, and positioning the spikes in place, driving the spikes, and discharging the processed tie, the template system utilizing as a principle motive force the displacement of the template reciprocating drive piston for positioning the template, as well as dispensing the plates. The present invention further is configured to facilitate the installation of threaded spikes or screws, as are utilized in high-speed, concrete and other cross-ties. A drilling station is therefore provided for drilling bores into the tie, along with a separate screwed pre-plating station which includes a template for positioning the tie, a plate dispenser, and an array of racheting mechanisms for engaging and screwing threaded spikes or screws into the bores formed by the drilling station to securely pre-plate each plate on a tie, which may be wood or concrete, traditional or high-speed.

    • A fastener driving apparatus is disclosed which comprises a vibrating feed hopper, a fastener feed assembly for receiving the fasteners from the hopper and serially delivering the fasteners to a discharge tube which leads to an automatic screwdriver. The fastener feed assembly comprises a body member which mounts a slide for transverse sliding movement between a first position wherein the fastener is received in a notch in the slide, and a second position where the fastener is delivered to a discharge opening which leads to the discharge tube and to the screwdriver. A first air line system is provided for moving the slide toward the first or fastener receiving position, and for concurrently injecting air into the discharge opening to move a fastener previously positioned in the tube to the screwdriver. A second air line is provided for directing a stream of air into contact with the fastener at the second position so as to positively move the fastener into the discharge opening.

    • An automatic fastener feeding and driving apparatus is disclosed which includes a vibrating feed hopper, and a fastener feed assembly for receiving the fasteners from the hopper and serially delivering the fasteners to a delivery line which leads to an automatic hand held driver. The fastener feed assembly comprises a body member having a slide for transverse sliding movement between a first position wherein a fastener is received in a notch in the slide, and a second position where the fastener is delivered to a discharge opening which leads to the discharge line and to the driver. The body member and the slide include an internal air line system by which air is delivered into the lower portion of the notch of the slide and into the discharge opening, only after the slide has essentially reached its discharge position. This timing of the delivered air avoids undue pressurization and turbulence in the discharge line prior to the entry of the fastener, which can interfere with the gravity drop of the fastener into the line. A novel control system for operating the feed slide is also disclosed, which includes a four way air valve which is controlled by the operation of the trigger of the driver.
