    • Machine comprising a main frame (1), machine bed (2), headstock (3) and tailstock (4) with means (17, 18) for mounting of the work for rotation about a work axis (C2), the means being disposed on the machine bed, with the headstock being movable in a direction (Z-axis) parallel to the work axis (C2). The inventive machine is characterized by the inclusion of a first horizontal slide (5) arranged on the main frame and movable in the Z-direction, the first horizontal slide (5) supporting a vertical slide (7) arranged for displacement in the X-direction. The vertical slide (7) supports a second horizontal slide (10), movable in the Y-direction, and the second horizontal slide (10) supports the cradle accommodating the tool head in a manner swivelable about the A-axis parallel to the X-direction. The tailstock is arranged fixedly on the machine bed.

    • A gear finishing machine is provided which utilizes a driven rotary finishing gear and two idler finishing gears. In addition a reciprocating oscillatory mechanism that employs leaf springs as the coupling member, changes rotary into reciprocating motion, which serves to oscillate the workpiece gear across the finishing gears. The machine is capable of either burnishing or honing the workpiece gear according to the ratio of the rotary to sliding velocity of the workpiece gear relative to the finishing gears, duty cycle, and loading pressures. Sensors are utilized which detect undersize and oversize gears, the withdrawing of the driven burnishing gear to the correct location to eject the workpiece gear and the presence of gears in the input and output chute which serve as control signals for the machine.

    • A ring gear burnishing machine is disclosed that has a pair of burnishing stations in which ring gear workpieces are burnished in an overlapping cycle that minimizes burnishing time. Each burnishing station consists of a support table which is coupled to an air cylinder spring and is vertically displaceable so that a burnishing gear is placed on the support table when it is in its lowered position, and burnishing takes place when the support table is in its raised position. Burnishing is accomplished by a pair of burnishing gears at each station. One of the burnishing gears of each pair is driven and the other burnishing gear of the pair is an idler gear. A gear engagement mechanism that includes a pivotable support holder and a pair of rollers which engage the periphery of the ring gear is designed so that the rollers, which do not distort the ring gear, push it into mesh first with one of the rotating burnishing gears, and then with the other burnishing gear of the pair. The rollers force the ring gear to move so the center axis of the ring gear, which is initially displaced from the center of the support table, is positioned to coincide with the center point of the support table. The ring gears are fed onto the support tables in an alternating manner by an oscillating shuttle arm which forces the ring gears onto the support tables. The operation of the support tables and the gear engagement mechanism are controlled by cam surfaces on a rotating cam which controls cam followers that are positioned on opposite sides of said cam and are maintained apart against the force of a third air cylinder spring.
