    • A heat transfer roll has first and second disc-shaped outer end sections each having a centrally located tubular shaft. An inner tubular body is fitted over the two outer end sections, and a plurality of spiral ribs extend from the first end to the second end around the inner tubular body, and an outer tubular shell is fitted over the spiral ribs to form a plurality of spiral channels. Each of the end sections have one or more passageways therein which are in communication with the bore through the tubular shaft and the spiral channels. One of the outer end sections is adapted to receive a plurality of removable plugs, such that each removable plug when inserted will block the flow of liquid to one of the spiral channels. To clean such a heat transfer roll, all but one channel may be closed such that the remaining open channel may be cleaned.

    • A roll for use in a calender or a like machine has a carrier which is surrounded by a flexible cylindrical shell. One or more hydrostatic displacing units are installed between the carrier and the shell to deform, when necessary, one or more selected portions of the shell. Each displacing unit has a bearing element with an external surface which is closely adjacent the internal surface of the shell and has one or more pockets for reception of a heated pressurized hydraulic fluid. Each bearing element has a second surface which faces away from the external surface, and the respective displacing unit further comprises one or more plenum chambers adjacent the second surface of the bearing element. The pocket or pockets of the bearing element receive heated fluid from a first source, and the plenum chamber or chambers of the bearing element receive compressed oil or another hydraulic fluid from a second source which can include one or more parts of the first source or vice versa. Each plenum chamber can discharge a stream of oil by way of a flow restrictor to thus prevent stagnation and/or overheating of compressed oil therein. The thus discharged oil can be returned to the source of compressed oil.

    • In a hydraulically supported roll including a rotatable hollow cylinder and a stationary crosshead, transverse end seals are provided to seal a longitudinal chamber formed in the clearance space between the crosshead and the hollow cylinder. Each transverse end seal includes a roller bearing having a first bearing ring rotatable with the hollow cylinder and a second bearing ring mounted on the crosshead. The first bearing ring includes a first surface, which along with a second surface formed on a ring secured to the crosshead, defines a clearance gap. The gap has a width of less than 0.1 mm. The first bearing ring seals the longitudinal chamber at the inner circumference of the hollow cylinder and the first and second gap defining surfaces are located on parts that are axially restrained with respect to the crosshead.

    • A calender roll whose shell consists of ferromagnetic material is heated by several groups of electromagnets which are mounted within the shell on a stationary carrier and whose pole shoes are adjacent to the internal surface of the shell. The temperature of the external surface of the shell is monitored at several locations as considered in the axial direction of the roll, and the resulting signals are compared with reference signals denoting the optimum or desired temperatures at such locations. Signals denoting the differences between the actual temperature signals and desired temperature signals are used to regulate the characteristics of electric current which is supplied to the windings of the electromagnets. Each electromagnet of each group can be regulated independently of all other electromagnets. Alternatively, two or more electromagnets of each group or entire groups of electromagnets may be regulated simultaneously. Additional electromagnets are provided to heat the end portions of the shell. Alternatively, such end portions can be heated by the rotors of electric motors which rotate the shell. The characteristics of current which is supplied to the windings of certain electromagnets can be influenced by signals which denote the magnitude of flexural stresses upon selected portions of the shell so that the corresponding electromagnets oppose deformation of adjacent portions of the shell.

    • An arrangement for controlling the temperature of an arbor-sleeve type roll employed in a rolling process such as in a briquetting machine by transporting temperature control medium to the extremities of the working surface of a removable sleeve by providing in the arbor a system of passageways extending radially and terminating at a point beneath the outer surface of the arbor and by providing in the sleeve a system of interconnecting axially extending passageways. Both of these systems are joined by manifold ring assemblies mounted externally of the roll and which include an expandable bellows which compensate for thermal variation of the roll during the briquetting process. Two other rings, also mounted externally, are connected to the opposite sides of the arbor and sleeve, thereby preventing relative movement between the arbor and sleeve and still permitting the quick removal and replacement of the sleeve.
