    • A linear fire extinguisher system is described that includes a flexible, substantially closed plastic tube containing an extinguishant, the tube containing a multiplicity of selectively weakened pre-scored orifices at preselected spacing along the tube length, whereby sufficient heat from a fire contacting the tube will weaken and rupture the tube predictably and facilitate efficient discharge of the extinguishant directly onto the fire. The structure of the invention may include two coaxial inner and outer tubes, each tube containing extinguishant wherein the outer tube may initially rupture upon heating and discharge extinguishant onto the fire, the inner tube being available for rupture and discharge onto the fire upon re-ignition or if the discharge of the outer tube is insufficient to extinguish the fire.

    • A fire safety device for controlling the spread of fire in a structure. The invention comprises a base plate, a smoke detector, a syringe, and a cover. The syringe has a reservoir containing a fire retardant chemical. A fuse link holder has a melting fuse link that maintains a plunger assembly in position, and a spring is loaded behind the plunger. The syringe also has a nozzle in open communication with a supply line, which is in open communication to the reservoir. When a sufficiently high ambient temperature is reached, the fuse link melts, releasing the piston rod from the fuse link and allowing the coil spring to urge the plunger toward the other end of the syringe, and forcing the fire-retardant chemical from the nozzle. When smoke is present, the smoke detector sounds an audible alarm.

    • The method and appliance for fire extinguishing according to the present invention are suitable for use in stationary depot premises, baggage and engineering compartments of transportation facilities, etc. According to the method of the invention, at a suitable position in a compartment, an individual container is fixed, which is fitted with a fuse 3 responding to infrared radiation and carries a fire extinguishing compound whose function is effectuated by a chemically active liquid inhibitor confined in miniature capsules made from thermoplastic material and which is distributed over the compartment after ignition of the fuse 3 by conversion from a liquid to a gas. Vapors of the gaseous inhibitor escape from the container and produce a noncombustible atmosphere in the compartment. The appliance for performing this method embodies a container made non-gastight and fitted with a thermal charge placed inside it in the form of a rod manufactured from a highly inflammable oxygen-containing substance. Raising the temperature in the compartment after ignition of the fuse will destroy the material of the miniature capsules and change the inhibitor from a liquid to a gas. This allows for quickly extinguishing a fire by producing a neutral noncombustible atmosphere in the compartment.

    • A heat-responsive valve construction for use with pressurized containers such as aerosol cans and the like, comprising an annular mounting cup in which there is contained an apertured sealing gasket and also a rigid washer engaged with the gasket. Passing through the cup, gasket and washer is an axially shiftable valve stem having an axial bore in its outer end and having lateral or side orifices intermediate its ends, which communicate with the bore. The outer end of the valve stem also has a plurality of heat-sensing arms extending radially and then axially from the end of the stem in spaced relation thereto, said arms being engaged with the top of the mounting cup. A connector ring joins the ends of the arms where they engage the cup. The other end portion of the valve stem carries a compression spring which is engaged with the rigid washer in the cup and also with an abutment on the stem. The spring applies pressure to the washer, which in turn presses the sealing gasket against the underside of the top wall of the cup. Spring pressure is thus exerted through the stem on the heat-responsive arms, and maintains these in engagement with the top surface of the cup. Under conditions of excessive heat, the arms weaken and yield, being aided by the action of the coil spring, and the latter thereupon shifts the valve stem to move the side orifices thereof completely through the sealing gasket whereby they communicate with the interior of the container to enable discharge of the pressurized liquid therein through the bore of the stem.

    • An attachment for a manually operated, valve controlled compressed gas fire extinguisher or alarm device includes a housing attachable to the device by means of pins which also pivotally mount the conventional valve operating hand levers of the device. A plunger, guided freely by a spring loaded plunger operator, extends through an opening made in the upper hand lever and is aligned with the valve. The plunger operator normally is held in retracted position by a heat responsive fuse link which interconnects the housing and operator. Upon melting of the fuse link the operator and plunger extend, under the influence of the spring loading, the plunger thus engaging and operating the valve to release the compressed gas. The attachment permits normal manual operation of the device.
