    • According to this invention, there has been provided an inline final filter unit for the filtration and administration of intravenous fluids or the like wherein a flexible, nonporous intravenous tubing member contains microporous hollow fibres arranged within the tubular member parallel to the longitudinal direction of such tubing. The fibres are closed at one end and open at the opposite end. A flow blocking material is arranged around the fibres for blocking fluid flow through the flexible tubular member, other than through the material of said hollow fibres. At least one gas permeable hydrophobic fibre is arranged to extend into the tubing member in proximity to the microporous hollow filter fibres. One end of the hydrophobic fibre(s) is in communication with the atmosphere.

    • A gas separating and venting filter is disclosed for separating gases and liquids and venting the gases in any position of the filter. A housing defines an interior chamber, with inlet and outlet means for the flow of liquid into and out of the chamber. A hydrophilic filter membrane extends along one major wall of the chamber, with longitudinally extending open-sided passageways in the one major wall facing the hydrophilic filter membrane and leading to the outlet means. The hydrophilic filter membrane is flexible for ballooning into the passageways in response to a build-up of pressure in the chamber to restrict and/or cut off the flow of liquid through the passageways. A hydrophobic filter membrane extends along substantially the entire length of an opposite major wall of the chamber between the inlet and outlet means for passing gas but not liquid therethrough. A plurality of spaced vent holes are formed in the opposite major wall for venting gas which has passed through the hydrophobic filter membrane.

    • A vented filter spigot for gravity feed intravenous liquid administration is provided having a filter spigot housing; a filter chamber in the housing; an inlet and an outlet in the housing, the housing being arranged to have the inlet oriented up and the outlet oriented down when installed for liquid feed from a liquid supply for intravenous administration; the inlet being shaped for attachment to a supply of liquid in a container for intravenous administration, and the outlet being shaped for attachment to an intravenous liquid administration apparatus; a liquid-permeable filter that is gas-impermeable when wet disposed in the filter chamber in a manner so as to extend generally vertically when the inlet is oriented up, and across the line of fluid flow through the chamber from the inlet to the outlet so that all through flow must pass through the filter; and dividing the chamber into two generally vertically-extending portions, one upstream and one downstream of the filter; a vent in an uppermost portion of the housing when the inlet is oriented up in flow communication with the upstream portion of the filter chamber; and a liquid-impermeable gas permeable filter disposed across the line of flow through the vent, so that all vent flow must pass through the filter, the filter restricting such flow to gas to which it is permeable; first and second passages in the housing putting the inlet into fluid flow communication with the filter chamber, the first passage opening into an upper part of the upstream portion of the filter chamber, and the second passage being longer than the first and opening into a lower part of the upstream portion of the filter chamber; whereby outflow of liquid via the filter chamber through the outlet aspirates air via the vent, liquid-impermeable gas-permeable filter and first passage into the container holding the supply of liquid, and makes it possible to maintain liquid flow from the container via the second passage to the outlet.

    • Intravenous administration set for use with a source of liquid to be administered intravenously and having a length of flexible tube with a fitting carried on one end of the same adapted to be connected to the source of liquid. A burette is provided which has a chamber formed therein. The other end of the flexible tube is mounted in the burette so that liquid passing through the tube flows into the burette chamber. A filter assembly is carried by the burette and has a recess formed therein. A projection extends into the recess and defines at least a portion of an outlet opening for withdrawing liquid from the burette chamber. The filter assembly includes a hydrophillic filter which provides the only path for the flow of liquid and gas into the recess. The member and the projection are formed in such a manner that all liquid passing through the outlet opening must pass into the recess through the filter and carry with it any gas in the recess. Tubing is connected to the outlet opening in communication with the burette chamber and is adapted to be coupled to the patient which is to be intravenously fed.
