    • A coupler is provided which is mountable to a fitting of a breakaway coupling to facilitate assembly and disassembly of the coupling. The coupling has a first fitting and a second fitting which are held together by a ball in the first fitting which is received in a detent in the second fitting. The second fitting has an outer sleeve on which the detent is formed, and an inner sleeve slideable in the outer sleeve. A latch ring on the inner sleeve is alignable with the groove. A spring biases the inner sleeve and latch ring into a locking position in which the detent balls are urged into engagement with the detent to hold the two fittings together. The coupler includes an open ended housing having a side wall and an end wall. A plate, securable to the second fitting inner sleeve, is received in the coupler housing for axial movement. A cam on an outer surface of the housing end wall is connected to the plate by a rod. The cam is pivotable between a first position in which its camming surface is out of engagement with the housing end wall and a second position in which its camming surface engages the housing end wall. As the cam is moved to the second position, the plate is pulled toward the housing end wall, thereby pulling the second fitting inner sleeve axially in the outer sleeve against the force of the spring to move the latch ring out of alignment with the groove sufficiently to enable the detent ball to move radially in its associated opening and to disengage the groove.

    • A sealing valve for controlling the flow of fluid through a passage defined by the interior surface of a tubular casing comprises a valve body having a longitudinal axis and a longitudinal bore therethrough. The valve body is formed for releasable connection to the tubular casing when the valve body is inserted longitudinally into the passage of the tubular casing. A valve seat is disposed on the valve body. A sealing assembly comprises a sealing device adapted for sealing engagement with the valve seat. The sealing device is movable with respect to the valve seat from a closed sealing position in which the sealing device sealingly engages the valve seat to block fluid flow through the bore in the valve body to an open position in which the sealing device is spaced from the valve seat to permit fluid flow through the bore. A filter element is disposed adjacent the inner end of the sealing valve and is configured for substantially preventing passage of particulate matter of a size capable of interfering with movement of the sealing device to its closed sealing position. The valve body, sealing assembly and filter element are so constructed that they are held in assembly with one another independent of the valve stem so that they can be simultaneously installed in and removed from the tubular casing passage as a single unit.

    • A two-position pilot-operated SPM valve includes an improved cage for controlling fluid flow to a ram of a subsea blowout preventer. SPM valve 10 includes a piston 48 axially movable with respect to a valve body 12, a spool 38 for moving within the valve body between an open position and a closed position, and a piston rod 34 structurally interconnecting the spool and the piston. A cage 40 within the valve body receives the spool 38, and includes an axially intermediate body 84 formed from a selected plastic material, an upper body 86 removably secured to the intermediate body and having one or more radial throughports 106 therein, and a lower body 88 removably secured to the intermediate body. An external seal 92 is provided for sealing between the intermediate body and the valve body, an internal seal 96 provides dynamic sealing engagement between the intermediate body and the exterior cylindrical surface 72 of the spool. Interior cylindrical surface 100 of the intermediate body is in sliding engagement with the exterior spool cylindrical surface 72, and substantially reduces wear on the spool due to the plastic-to-metal sliding engagement of these surfaces. During servicing of the SPM valve, an intermediate body 84 may be replaced with a new intermediate body and both the upper and lower cage bodies installed on the new intermediate body. An improved technique is also provided for compressing the coil spring which biases the spool to the closed position.

    • A valve assembly for providing easy and rapid removal of the valve packing means while the valve is in service, closed, or out of service, which assembly includes a valve body, a bonnet connected to the body, a packing housing assembly means secured to the bonnet, a packing gland mounted on the packing means assembly, a valve stem movably secured in the valve assembly and having a closure member adapted to seat selectively in a valve closure seat in the valve body or, in the back seat condition, in a valve closure seat in the bonnet. The valve stem is threaded at its lower end adjacent the closure means for engagment with matching threads secured in the bonnet. The packing assembly means includes a stuffing box or packing cartridge that is readily detachable from the bonnet to permit removal of the packing material while the valve is in service, closed, or out of service, without damage to the stem or interior surfaces of the packing means assembly. The packing means assembly contains a drive bushing secured in one end thereof, constructed and arranged for forcible displacement through the packing means assembly to displace the packing material thereform.

    • A simple but effective valve assembly is disclosed wherein a valve stem retaining spring clip is mounted within a valve stem removal aperture in the valve handle to prevent inadvertent disassembly of the valve handle from the valve stem. The valve assembly of the present invention includes a valve body having a fluid entrance and a fluid exit; a valve plug longitudinally movable within the valve body and disposed, in a valve closed position, against a valve seat to prevent fluid from entering said valve body; a valve stem disposed longitudinally through the valve body connecting the valve plug to a valve handle assembly; a valve body neck portion for securing the valve handle assembly to the valve body and a valve handle assembly including a valve stem retaining notch and an adjoining valve stem receiving aperture larger than the diameter of a handle connecting portion of the valve stem. The valve handle assembly includes a retention spring disposed within the valve stem receiving aperture so that the handle connecting valve stem portion cannot fit through the aperture freely until sufficient force is applied to the retention spring to force the retention spring radially outwardly from the valve stem receiving aperture.
