    • A system and method for context-assisted information retrieval include a communication device, such as a wireless personal communication device, for transmitting screen-context information and voice data associated with a user request to a voice information retrieval server. The voice information retrieval server utilizes the screen-context information to define a grammar set to be used for speech recognition processing of the voice frames; processes the voice frames using the grammar set to identify response information requested by the user; and convert the response information into response voice data and response control data. The server transmits the response voice data and the response control data to the communication device, which generates an audible output using the response voice data and also generates display data using the response control data for display on the communication device.

    • A system and method for establishing a long distance call connection between call stations over the PSTN initiates a call connection request from a desktop application to operate locally on a user workstation. The desktop application communicates call connection information to a long distance service provider server without requiring a web browser when a request is initiated by a user. Call connection information is processed by the long distance service provider server and an information packet is sent to a call controller, to effect a call connection over the PSTN via a TDM toll switch. A communication connection with the long distance service provider server is automatically established by the desktop application when request is initiated, and a subsequently released when the call connection request is received and processed by the long distance service provider.

    • There is provided a communication device which has a first communication system that communicates with an external telephone device and a second communication system that communicates with an external computer. The communication device comprises a call unit and a data acquisition unit. The call unit makes a call to a telephone device designated by a user using the first communication system. If a destination of the call unit is decided by the user's designation, a data acquisition unit obtains data corresponding to the destination telephone device using the second communication system. By only making a call operation, the user can obtain the data corresponding to the destination telephone device from the communication device through the computer network which is a different kind of network from the telephone line network. That is, the communication device can reduce user's operations to access related devices over various kinds of networks.

    • A telephony system and method are adapted for selecting an operating mode of a telephony system responsive to sensor inputs. A presence detector, communicatively coupled to the telephony system, detects people within a predetermined area associated with the telephony system. A detection signal is communicated to the telephony system responsive to a detection. The telephony system is operated in a first operating mode absent the detection signal, and in a second operating mode responsive to the detection signal. A system status display indicates a first data set in the first operating mode, and a second data set in the second operating mode, the second data set being different from the first data set. In a more particular implementation, a central station displays status information for remote telephone devices reflective of a user's presence. In another particular implementation, telephony system call routing is modified responsive to detected user presence and/or identity.
