    • A power detection system implemented using a pair of directional couplers and a transmission line (or equivalent) disposed between the directional couplers, wherein the transmission line (or equivalent) provides a 90° phase shift between the directional couplers. Accurate power detection is provided by combining the powers detected at each of the directional couplers, whereby the combined power is independent of load phase. The total power in the forward case is given by Pc1=2*Pf*C, where Pf is the forward power and C is the coupling coefficient the directional couplers. The total power in the reflected case is given by Pc1=2*Pf*C*(ρ2+D2), where Pf is the forward power, C is the coupling coefficient of said directional couplers, ρ is the reflection coefficient, and D is the directivity of the directional couplers.

    • A circuit for processing radio frequency signals. The circuit includes a substrate where the circuit can be placed. The substrate can be a meta material and can incorporate at least one dielectric layer (100). A directional coupler (106) and at least one ground (112) can be coupled to the substrate. The dielectric layer can include a first region (102) with a first set of substrate properties and a second region (104) with a second set of substrate properties. The substrate properties can include a permittivity and a permeability. A substantial portion of the directional coupler (106) can be coupled to the second region (104). The permittivity and/or permeability of the second region (104) can be higher than the permittivity and/or permeability of the first region (102). The increased permittivities and/or permeabilities can reduce a size of the directional coupler (106) and effect a change in a variety of electrical characteristics associated with the directional coupler (106).

    • A multi-layered coupling device (FIG. 9) for coupling radio frequency (RF) energy on a transmission line (302) to a coplanar coupler. The coupling device includes a first coupling structure that is coplanar with the transmission line (302) and parallel plate structure (304) positioned a predetermined distance in a plane parallel to the transmission line (302). The parallel plate structure (304) is not physically connected to any other structure through the use of vias or the like. The parallel plate structure (304) is used to increase the coupling coefficient and directivity of the coplanar structure by being divided into a plurality of segments with varying dimensions to better control coupling capacitances.

    • A microwave directional coupler comprises a coupler dielectric board which is mounted substantially perpendicular to the surface of a parent circuit board. Upper interdigital elements are disposed on opposing surfaces of the coupler dielectric board. The coupling between the upper interdigital elements determines the odd mode impedance Z.sub.oo of the microwave directional coupler. Lower interdigital elements are also disposed on opposing surfaces of the coupler dielectric board. The lower interdigital elements are connected to ground and are arranged so that coupling between the lower interdigital elements and the upper interdigital elements determines the even mode impedance Z.sub.oe of the microwave directional coupler.
