    • A polymer-dispersed liquid crystal based display is embedded inside a lightguide illuminator sheet which provides illumination of the display without the need for a backlight or frontlight. Light from one or more light sources is coupled into the lightguide sheet and is guided within a range of high angles of incidence within the sheet by total internal reflection. The guided light illuminating portions of the display which are in diffusing state is scattered such that some of the light is allowed to escape total internal reflection, providing visibility of the display. Guided light illuminating portions of the display which are in non-diffusing state remains guided within the lightguide illuminator sheet. Combining multiple lightguide embedded displays can be used to provide a three-dimensional display. When a low refractive index cladding is applied to the surfaces of the lightguide embedded display, the display is robust in a dirty environment, and/or can be laminated to adjacent lightguide embedded displays. The use of one or more coupled light sources, such as light emitting diodes, provides color by combining one or more colored light sources or by time-sequentially driving one or more colored light sources. The lightguide illuminator embedded display may further be used as a content dependent active backlight for an LCD display panel to provide improved dynamic contrast.

    • A dual mode Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) capable of functioning in a dual mode, a monochrome reflective mode and a color transmissive mode. The present invention provides an LCD with color filters only over the transmissive part of a pixel, enabling readability in the ambient light. Yet another aspect of the present invention is the elimination of the black matrix mask used typically in color filter creation. Additionally, the present invention provides diagonal pixels to improve the resolution of the LCD in the color transmissive mode. Further, an aspect of the present invention enables the light to switch between two colors, while a third color (typically green) is always on, thereby, decreasing the required frame rate of the LCD, when used in the hybrid field sequential approach. Yet another aspect of the present invention is to create colors from the backlight, eliminating the need for color filters. Yet another aspect of the present invention is use of color filters over only the green pixels, eliminating the need for using additional masks for making the color filter array.

    • A display apparatus that can perform even a high quality moving picture display and provides improved color purity, and an illumination device used in the display apparatus are provided. The display apparatus includes: an illumination device (3) that includes a first light source (31G) that emits light of a first color and a second light source (31RB) that emits light of a second color complementary to the first color; a gate driver (24) that sequentially selects each of scanning lines GL at a cycle of 0.5 frames; a source driver (23) that, at a first half of one frame time period, writes a data signal into each of pixels of the first color, and at a latter half thereof, writes a data signal into each of pixels of the other two colors; and a switch circuit (26) that, at the first half of one frame time period, switches on the first light source while switching off the second light source, and at the latter half of the time period, switches on the second light source while switching off the first light source.
