    • A system incorporating a cathode ray tube display device, a comparator circuit and a data recording media is utilized to continuously display measured parameters and selectively apply signals corresponding to the measured parameters for permanent recording when the measured parameters vary beyond predetermined limits. A delay type circuit is employed to provide permanent recording of signals occurring prior to the excursion of the measured parameter beyond the predetermined limits thus providing a basis for evaluating operating conditions existing prior to an unacceptable variation of a parameter beyond predetermined limits. The permanent recording of the measured parameter extends from a time prior to the occurrence of an out of limits condition, indicative of an abnormal operating condition, to a time following termination of the out of limits condition, additionally a multi-channel cathode ray tube display provides simultaneous display of individual traces representing a plurality of measured parameters wherein control circuits permit stationary display of some parameters while providing updating of information contained in other traces.

    • The disclosure describes an ignition system for an internal combustion engine fitted with a plurality of spark plugs. The engine rotates a distributor that includes a primary coil which induces voltages in a secondary coil. The secondary coil voltages are sequentially distributed to the spark plugs in order to operate the engine. The engine is provided with a source of common potential, generally referred to as chassis ground.Improved apparatus for displaying the waveform of the voltage produced by the secondary coil includes an oscilloscope having a first input and a second input. A conductive probe is positioned close to the secondary coil, and a single conductor operatively connects the probe to the first input of the oscilloscope. A second conductor operatively connects the second input of the oscilloscope to chassis ground so that the waveform of the voltage produced by the secondary coil is displayed on the oscilloscope.

    • A method and apparatus is disclosed by which any general purpose external trigger laboratory oscilloscope can be utilized to display alphanumeric characters. Each character to be displayed is composed of a plurality of segments appearing at various segment positions in various segment rows to define a conventional matrix, various ones of the segments being displayed during each horizontal sweep of the oscilloscope trace. In between character segments to be displayed, or when no display is desired, the trace is effectively blanked by a vertical clamping voltage so as to position the oscilloscope trace in an off-screen position. The ''''clamping'''' technique of the invention, i.e., biasing the oscilloscope trace to an off-screen position when no character segment is to be displayed, eliminates the necessity of providing Z-axis modulation to effect blanking.

    • A signal display tube includes composite strips placed uniformly across a phosphor coating of the screen. Each strip comprises a photoconductive, a conductive and an insulative member. The electron beam sweeps the viewing screen with an intensity insufficient to excite the phosphor coating. The presence of a bright spot is sensed by an adjacent composite strip, which then causes the electron beam to produce a new bright spot. The time involved between sensing existing spots and producing new ones is such that the existing bright spots either move laterally or are refreshed in the same position.

    • An up/down counter is interconnected with a clock using a double-throw momentary contact switch to form a one decade interval select control. When the switch is moved to the ''''increment'''' position, the decade counter increments at a rate determined by pulses supplied by a low frequency oscillator. When the switch is moved to the ''''decrement'''' position, the decade counter decrements at the same rate. A plurality of up/down decade counter-switch combinations can be interconnected to form multi-decade interval select controls. In this configuration, when any particular counter increments or decrements through a decade, a signal is sent to the next higher counter, which then increments or decrements appropriately.
