    • Measuring apparatus of the impeller-type flowmeter kind, designed to be mounted inside a conduit for ducting a fluid flow and comprising an impeller supported for unrestrained rotation about a shaft arranged longitudinally inside the conduit. In accordance with the invention, a rotor is supported for unrestrained rotation coaxially with and downstream of the impeller and carries blades which lie substantially in planes passing through the rotor axis, whereby a comparison between the impeller and rotor rotation speeds omega and omega 1, respectively, enables the accuracy of the flow rate measurement to be monitored and can provide an indication of the viscosity of the fluid.

    • An observed operational state can include an operational state of one or more system devices. A sensor can emit, in response to a detected observable condition reflective of a given operational state, a simulated signal reflective of a different operational state as a proxy for the detected condition. A controller receiving such a proxy signal can, at least partially responsively to the proxy signal, issue a command corresponding to the given operational state. For example, a leak detector can emit in response to a detected leak, or a flow-rate sensor can emit in response to a detected flow-rate of a liquid, a simulated fan-speed tachometer signal representative of a selected fan speed. At least partially in response to observing a simulated tachometer signal, a controller can issue a system command corresponding to an underlying system condition for which the simulated tachometer signal is a proxy.

    • A flow counter capable of correctly checking an operating state of the flow counter and leakage and correctly indicating a total amount of flow by allowing the rotation of a pointer to be learned accurately in the form of numerical data. In this flow counter (1), rotation of a flow detection driving gear (5) is transmitted to a flow indication section (4) composed of a plurality of digit wheels (4a1 to 4a8) by a main gear train section (2). The rotation of the flow detection driving gear (5) is also transmitted to a first pointer (6) by a branch gear section (3) branched from the main gear train section (2). The first pointer (6) indicates the operating state of the flow detection driving gear (5). The flow indication section (4) indicates a total amount of flow. A rotation detection member, which is a component of a rotation sensor, is integrally rotatably mounted on a rotating shaft of the first pointer (6). An amount of rotation of the rotating shaft is electrically detected by a rotation sensor.

    • A water meter has a meter register having an encoder having electromagnetic wave emitters, e.g., infrared emitters to measure water flow and direction of water flow through the meter. The encoder has two of three spaced emitters directing infrared rays at predetermined time intervals toward a rotating detector wheel having a reflective surface portion and a non-reflective surface portion facing the emitters and an infrared sensor. The reflective surface portion of the detecting wheel reflects the infrared rays incident thereon toward the sensor. A microprocessor connected to the sensor acts on signals from the sensor to determine material flow. The meter register transmits the signal to a distant receiver. The microprocessor of a meter register has an algorithm to prevent the meter register from sending signals until after the meter register or a water meter having a meter register is installed and water moved through the meter.
