    • A vehicle is reliably prevented from rolling back during automatic start on a slope or the like. An automatic stop-and-start device includes an engine control unit 10 that automatically stops an engine 2 when a predetermined stop condition is fulfilled and automatically starts the engine 2 when a predetermined start condition is fulfilled; a brake device 3 that imparts a brake force to a vehicle that carries the engine 2; and a brake control unit 16 that holds a brake state produced by the brake device 3 when a predetermined brake hold request condition is fulfilled and releases the brake state produced by the brake device 3 when a predetermined brake release condition is fulfilled. The engine control unit 10 determines whether the brake control unit 16 holds the brake state produced by the brake device 3 and automatically starts the engine 2 when the determination is affirmed.

    • A controller for a vehicle makes it possible to restrain a temperature rise or a temperature fall in a passenger compartment and also to reduce fuel consumption in conducting control to temporarily stop an engine when the vehicle is at rest. The controller for a vehicle includes an in-passenger-compartment temperature sensor which detects the temperature of the air supplied to an evaporator by actuating a blower fan, an outside air temperature sensor, an evaporator temperature sensor which detects the temperature of the evaporator, and an engine stop duration determiner which determines an engine stop duration on the basis of the temperature detected by the evaporator temperature sensor immediately before an engine stops and the temperatures detected by the outside air temperature sensor and the in-passenger-compartment temperature sensor. An engine control unit continues the operation of the blower fan after a stop condition holds and the engine is stopped, and then restarts the engine and actuates a compressor when the engine stop duration has elapsed.

    • When a restart of an engine is performed due to the requirement of a vehicle state unintended by a driver, a creep force which is initially generated is suppressed to a small value so that a vehicle is prevented from moving off. When automatic stop conditions are satisfied, the engine 1 stops, and when restart conditions are satisfied, a starting motor 2 is started so as to restart an engine 1. A condition for engine restart unintended by the driver is determined, and during a predetermined time when the engine restarts unintended by the driver, a smaller creep drive force is generated than when the engine restarts which is intended by the driver. During this predetermined time, only the motor 2 is rotated without starting the engine, and the creep force is suppressed low.
