    • An elongated channel member for supporting the surface of an underground rock formation includes a base portion with a bearing surface for contacting the rock strata and an opposite surface having a longitudinally extending central rib and flanged edges for resisting deflection and bending of the channel member under the load of the rock strata. A plurality of openings spaced a preselected distance apart extend through the central rib. A bearing plate is positioned in overlying abutting relation with each opening in the channel member. The bearing plate includes embossed areas and longitudinally flanged edges that are complementary in shape with the central rib and flanges on the channel to securely engage the bearing plate on the channel member. Thus, the bearing plate engages the channel member to restrain longitudinal and lateral movement of the bearing plate on the channel member and stiffen the channel member to resist bending. An anchor bolt extends through the aligned openings in the bearing plate and channel member into a bore hole drilled in the rock formation. Anchoring the bolt in the bore hole compresses the bearing plate against the channel member to urge the channel member into compressive relation with the surface of the rock formation to support the rock formation.

    • A truss structure, components, and method for trussing arched roofs in mines and the like. The truss structure includes, in addition to specially designed brackets and tensioned elongate connectors, one or more medially positioned upstanding post brackets for upwardly abuting against central portions of an arched mine roof. The method and concept includes, in a preferred form, applying obtuse-angle-oriented elongate connectors such as tie rods, secured to a lower portion of a post bracket concerned such that, when said elongate connectors are tensioned, an upward thrust is applied to said post brackets, whereby to produce an increased compression zone in the roof rock above the arched roof. Like-constructed interlocking roof truss structures are also provided for both longitudinally and also tranversely trussing an arched mine roof.

    • Structure and method for deterring cutter roof failure in underground mines such as coal mines. An elemental device of such structure comprises a unique bracket accommodating angulated bolting and having end-apertured flanges suitable for accommodating mutually horizontal tie rods disposed in tension. A series of the bracket devices are mutually spaced end-to-end and are longitudinally aligned parallel and generally proximate to a rib-roof juncture. Connecting tie rods intercoupling the bracket devices, are disposed in tension and, because of such, the roof strata proximate the roof-rib edge is placed longitudinally in compression. Truss support structures incorporating a plurality of devices can be made up to support and place in compression in large roof areas to deter roof failure. The method involved, for deterring cutter roof failure, is to provide, in one form of the invention, the said bracket devices and then anchoring the same over, e.g., the pillar areas and joining the bracket devices together lying essentially parallel to rib-roof junctures along an elongate path.

    • A drilling tool for drilling a cylindrical borehole of relatively great depth in a soft material and then forming a conical enlargement adjacent the bottom of the borehole includes an axially elongated tool shank with a first drill at one end for cutting the cylindrical borehole and a second drill adjacent the first drill for cutting the conical enlargement. The second drill is formed of bit holders pivotally connected to a flattened part of the tool shank. An adjustable stop is provided on the tool shank for determining the depth of the borehole. A connecting link guide located within the tool shank interengages the bit holders and the tool shank. When the desired depth is reached, due to relative axial displacement between the tool shank and the connecting link guide, the bit holders are pivoted outwardly so that the second drill can cut the conical enlargement.
