    • A storage device for receiving a loop section of a flexible material web (8) moved in a conveying direction (18) between a feed area upstream of the storage device and a discharge area downstream thereof is described, the material web speeds at least periodically differing from one another in the feed area and the discharge area. The speed differences are compensated by a length change of the loop section stored in the storage device. On the feed side the storage device has a first pulling device formed by a suction belt (35, 55) and on the discharge side a separate, second pulling device formed by a parallel suction belt (35, 56). As a result of the parallel suction belts the drawn-in loop section is securely held by vacuum over most of its length, whereas between the pulling devices a tensile force-free loop partial section (4a) is moved to and fro in the store longitudinal direction with substantially no shape change in accordance with the store filling. A rotary hot stamping machine is described, in which such storage devices can be used with particular advantage.

The box may include web keepers (102) to retain the web during thread-up and a removable, sound insulated closure (130). A method of operating such a vacuum box is taught.

    • An in-line machine for attaching elongated, flexible closure tie elements to the individual bag portions of a laterally folded plastic film web being continuously discharged from a bag forming station, and being forcibly captured by a winder mechanism, engages and drives the moving web toward the winder mechanism by means of mutually spaced inlet, central and outlet drive rollers. During operation of the machine, first and second slack portions of the film web are respectively positioned between the inlet and central rollers, and between the central and outlet rollers. These slack portions are held in vertically looped configurations by a downwardly directed, yielding vacuum force applied thereto. The inlet and outlet rollers are driven at identical speeds corresponding to the constant linear film web output speed from the bag forming station. The central drive roller is alternately started and stopped to sequentially cause a portion of each bag to be momentarily stopped thereon, at which time the machine attaches a tie element to the stopped bag portion. During stoppage of each sequential bag portion, continued rotation of the inlet and outlet rollers lengthens the first film loop and shortens the second film loop. When the central drive roller is restarted it operates to equalize the film loop lengths. In this manner, each bag may be momentarily stopped, for tie element attachment purposes, without altering the constant output and input speeds of the bag forming station and winder mechanisms, and without imposing undesirably high longitudinal tension force on the plastic film web.

    • A web loop position sensing system detects the position of web material, such as magnetic tape, in a vacuum column by using light emitters and receptors arranged along an array outside the vacuum column. The light emitters direct light towards a retroreflective surface formed of glass bead tape on an interior side of the vacuum column. Light reflected by the glass bead tape is received by the light receptors in the array. The quantity of light received by the light receptors is detected and used to control a supply reel in a tape transport in which the vacuum column is used, thereby maintaining the web loop tension within the vacuum column.

    • Double-faced corrugated board issuing continuously from a double backer is fed into an accumulator pit forming a downwardly extending loop therein. The web is withdrawn intermittently from the upper end of the pit and fed to a reciprocating cutting and creasing press which produces box blanks. Adjustable curved guide supports are provided for the web at the upstream and downstream ends of the accumulator. Curvatures of these supports are adjusted to permit the web, as it enters and leaves the accumulator pit, to assume curves each of a radius that approaches but is no less than a critical radius below which unwanted transverse scores will form in the web.
