A sound source 3 for generating underwater acoustic pulses comprises an open-ended pipe which is moved through the water and which is provided at at least its leading end with a velocity transformer 7 so that water entering the velocity transformer flows along the pipe at a speed, relative to the pipe, which is greater than the speed of the source through the water, and further comprises cut-off means 5 for suddenly interrupting the flow of water along the pipe to produce an acoustic pulse by the " water-hammer " effect. One or more sources may be attached to a depressor 2 or to a pontoon for towing behind survey vessel 1, or the sources may be built into or fixed to the survey vessel. Velocity transformers 7, 8 are conical or exponentially tapered funnels. The cut-off means 5 is remotely controlled electrically, hydraulically or pneumatically from vessel 1 and may take the form of (a) a pair of apertured plates, one of which is moved to cover the apertures in the other, (b) a valve of the flapper or butterfly type, whose closure may be assisted by the water flow, or (c) a device for injecting high pressure air into the pipe against the water flow. If the pipe is rigid, closure of the cut-off means 5 results in a pressure pulse travelling back along pipe section 4 and a rarefaction pulse travelling along pipe section 6. Funnel 7 then acts as an acoustic horn for radiating the pressure pulse without unwanted reflection in the funnel. The rarefaction pulse may be broadened and attenuated by using a pipe section 6 and funnel 8 of appropriate dimensions and design, or it may be allowed to interfere with the pressure pulse from funnel 7 to give the sound source a directional characteristic. If the pipe is made compliant the acoustic radiation will be mainly from the pipe instead of from the funnels 7, 8. To this end the pipe may be constructed as (a) a perforated steel tube with an elastomeric outer sheath (e.g. of synthetic rubber), or (b) a tube of rubber reinforced by, e.g., a helical wire. The pipe compliance may be varied along the pipe (being lowest at the leading end) by varying the sizes and spacings of the perforations in construction (a) or by varying the pitch of the helix in construction (b). In a modified source for reducing inertial mechanical stress in the source and towing system when the water flow is stopped by the cut-off means 5, the pipe is provided with two opposed inlet branches such that the water flow directions in the two branches are respectively in and against the direction of travel of the source.
