    • A hot plate welding device designed specifically to apply asphalt membrane roofing material (hereafter referred to as material) without the use of an open flame. The device uses an electrically heated curved platen which heats the material as it is moved across and in contact with the heated platen. A cylindrical pressure roller applies pressure to the material to insure proper adhesion of the entire surface of the material to the roof structure. A variable speed motor is used as a drive motor for the device. This motor is interlocked with a sensor which senses the temperature of the material. If the material is not at proper temperature the device automatically slows down and waits for the material temperature to catch up to application temperature. The device is designed to have a low center of gravity which allows the device to be used on a roof of mild slope and where the device must fit under pipes and other obstacles commonly encountered when applying such roofing materials. The feed mechanism consists of two rollers one of which pivots such that they allow the material to be fed easily onto the heating platen from the surface of the roof while reducing the amount of friction caused by the device forcing itself between the roof and material. A steering mechanism allows the operator to guide the device and keep it in alignment with material.

    • An improved hot air welder which includes a blower communicating with a heater assembly mounted on a chassis wherein the chassis has coupled thereto a pressure wheel and tracking wheel, includes means for adjusting the angle of orientation of the pressure wheel and tracking wheel with respect to the chassis in order to obtain a proper pressure bias through the pressure wheel on the seam over which the pressure wheel rides, and for providing a proper orientation of the tracking wheel according to the slope of the roof upon which the welder is driven. The welder can accommodate inside and outside seams with equal facility. The air dam has an improved roller track to more evenly apply pressure against the underlying roofing material. A guide member slidably engages and accommodates roofing material from both the left and right sides to assist in guiding the hot air welder along the seam to be welded. A constant speed blower controlled by a gate valve controls the amount of air to the heater assembly. An alarm is included within the heater assembly for sensing insufficient temperature when the welder is operating and for sounding an audible alarm to indicate to the operator that insufficient heat is being delivered to the seam to manufacture a suitable weld.

    • Welding apparatus for plastic lining (5) in concrete tubing (4) comprises a centering carriage (6) movable inside the tubing along its length and fixable in position at a location adjacent a butt joint (51) having a seam to be welded. A carrier arm (10) is mounted for rotation about an axis (9) coincident with the axis of the tubing (4) for supporting a welding unit (14) at its outer end remote from the axis of the tubing. A drive source (15, 16) adjacent the welding unit engages the interior of the tubing and self propells the welding unit (14) and carrier arm (10) around the interior of the tubing (4). The welding unit (14) is biased outwardly towards the wall of the tubing and is guided along the welding seam by either a guide ring (21) or a roller (20) engaging a gap (48) between adjacent tubing sections. Several degrees of freedom are provided for accommodating lack of concentricity and translation of the welding unit along the length of the tubing without moving the centering carriage.
