    • An apparatus for storing, refrigerating and heating food items in serving containers including a rethermalization cart including a plurality of shelves. Each of the shelves support one of a plurality of food trays thereon. Each tray has a plurality of food compartments and openings for supporting one of the serving containers. Each serving container containing food to be heated includes a cover. Each shelf of the cart has at least three heating pads conforming to the openings of the tray when the tray is inserted in the shelf. The cart also includes a plurality of individual switches each controlling all of the heater pads of each tray shelf as a set. Each switch is provided within a channel recessed from the exterior surface of the cart. The cart may also include a hinged work station attached to the exterior surfaces thereof which is movable between a first position, wherein said station extends outwardly from the cart so that each tray can be placed thereon for food preparation, and a second position, wherein the station is closely confined to said cart.

Because of the control mechanism, the first compartment selectively cools or heats the first compartment depending on whether cold storing or heating of foods stored in the first compartment is desired, so that foods placed in the first compartment are refrigerated for a predetermined duration and then heated without being removed from the first compartment and foods stored in the second compartment are refrigerated while in the second compartment.

    • A heating system heats casseroles placed on trays on a passenger plane. The heating system includes heating plates vertically arranged at regular intervals to receive the casseroles between adjacent heating plates to heat each casserole from above and from beneath. The heating plate includes a ceramic plate, a heating element buried in the ceramic plate, electrodes projecting from the ceramic plate, and a reinforcing frame. The heating plate is attached to the inner surface of a side wall of a cabinet. The junction of the heating plate and the side wall is sealed in a water-tight manner. The heating system is connected to a power supply by connecting a receptacle connector fixedly provided on the cabinet, and a plug connector elastically supported on a fixed part of the galley of the passenger airplane so as to be vertically, horizontally and axially movable. When the receptacle connector is pressed against the plug connector, the plug connector is brought automatically into alignment with the receptacle connector. A tray is provided with a partition rib partitioning off a part of the surface of the tray to make a heating portion for receiving a casserole thereon. The casserole is surrounded closely by the partition rib and portions of a peripheral rib so that the heat of the casserole is not released outside. A casserole has a pan and a top formed of a heat-transmissive, transparent plastic.

    • The apparatus consists of a refrigerator (10) into which it is possible to insert trays (27, 28, 29) on which various tableware containing different foods and/or drinks are placed. The refrigerator contains, in addition to the cooling unit (13), a high-frequency generator (17) which interacts with induction coils which are arranged in the trays, making it possible to heat suitable tableware inductively. Furthermore, a temperature monitoring means (19) is provided which switches the high-frequency generator off or on during a settable heating time and on reaching a predetermined temperature. A preferred embodiment of the temperature monitoring means contains an induction coil (41), which corresponds to the coils in the trays, and a metal element (42), the heat capacity of which approximately corresponds to that of a piece of tableware. The metal element is connected to the refrigerator housing by a heat-conducting connection (43, 44, 46). The heat conduction corresponds approximately to the heat absorption of the food in the tableware. A temperature sensor (47) which switches the high-frequency generator off or on at the settable temperature is arranged on the metal element. The apparatus makes it possible for several portions of food to be prepared, stored under cool conditions and heated uniformly to a predetermined temperature at a predetermined time.
