    • A checkout terminal for customers in a retail store. The terminal provides a path for products from a loading conveyor section, via a scanning section and a common transfer conveyor section, to reach a respective one of a plurality of plurality of packing stations to be bagged or packed by or for the customer. Conveniently, three of these packing stations are arranged substantially parallel to each other. Each packing station may be associated with a corresponding payment interface. Customer throughput is increased by providing multiple packing areas associated with one loading and scanning area, and customer convenience is improved by the faster and more efficient configuration of the checkout terminal.

    • A system and method enables intervention events occurring at a self-checkout station at a retail site to be addressed by an operator located at a remote site distant from the retail site. The system includes a checkout station located at a retail site, a video camera and microphone mounted at the checkout station, a data communicator for collecting video and audio data from the video camera and microphone and operational data from the checkout station, an intervention service station for receiving the video, audio, and operational data from the data communicator, the intervention service station being located off-site from the retail site; and the intervention service station includes a checkout station command generator for generating and sending checkout station commands to the checkout station in response to the operational data received from the data communicator so that an operator at the intervention service station can intervene in the checkout station operation.

    • A cashierless shopping store includes a plurality of shopping carts into which selected items to be purchased are placed by shoppers. Each of the shopping carts includes a weight detector to measure the weight of items placed therein and a transmitter to transmit the measured weights over a wireless communications link. A portable wireless shopping terminal accompanies each of the shopping carts. Each shopping terminal reads item price and item weight data from each selected item to be purchased and receives the measured weight of each selected item transmitted over the wireless communication link by the transmitter. The shopping terminal compares the read item weight data with the transmitted measured weight to determine if the read item weight data and the transmitted measured weight for each selected item correlate. At least one checkout station is provided and includes a scale to measure the total weight of selected items in a shopping cart and a transmitter to transmit the measured total weight over the wireless communications link to the shopping terminal accompanying that shopping cart. The shopping terminal compares the measured total weight with the sum of the read item weight data to determine if the weights correlate.

    • An apparatus for self-serve checkout of large order purchases is provided. The apparatus includes one or more product code entry devices for entering a product code of an item to be purchased, a controller and a carousel assembly that includes a rotating mechanism, a rack coupled with the rotating mechanism, and a scale underneath the rotating mechanism and rack. The rack holds a plurality of bags open for packing a plurality of items, and may be rotated along with the rotating mechanism to present a select one of the bags for packing the item to be purchased. The scale provides a weight signal corresponding to a weight of packed items in the plurality of bags on the carousel. The controller monitors the weight signal to detect any abnormal weights or weight changes. The apparatus also may be provided with a large item holding assembly that includes a second scale which provides a second weight signal corresponding to the weight of one or more oversized items on the large item holding assembly.
