    • A photographic camera of the type having provision for automatic exposure control (for automatically setting either the diaphragm aperture, or the shutter speed, or both, in accordance with the prevailing light as measured by an exposure meter) in combination with an electronic flash unit detachably mountable on and removable from the camera. In distinction to prior arrangements where the mounting of the flash unit on the camera served to disconnect the automatic exposure control of the camera and where the automatic exposure control could not be reactivated until the flash unit was removed from the camera, the present construction provides for de-activating and reactivating the automatic exposure control by operation of the on and off switch of the flash unit. It is the position of this switch, acting through a projection on the switch mechanism which extends through an opening into the camera body, which serves to activate or deactivate the automatic exposure control of the camera, and to control the setting of the diaphragm to the proper aperture for use with the flash unit, according to its guide number.

    • An electronic light control system for photographic enlargers. A relay controlled by an electronic circuit turns the main enlarger light on to give the necessary illumination during the preliminary operations, then turns it off, and turns it on again for a controlled time interval for making the exposure on the sensitized paper. The control switches, which may be at a control desk or console, are in electronic circuits which may operate at a lower voltage than the main enlarger lamp, so that these control switches and the conductors leading to them do not have to withstand the higher voltage of the enlarger lamp.

    • A roll film camera in which the film is advanced from one exposure position to another by an electric motor. An electric circuit includes a switch responsive to the presence or absence of film from the focal plane of the camera, so arranged that the motor will not operate when there is no film in the camera, thus avoiding unnecessary drain on the battery which powers the motor. An indexing mechanism cooperates in controlling the extent of winding movement from one exposure position to the next, and is adjustable in accordance with the number of exposures accommodated by the length of the film, such as 12 or 24 or 36 exposures.

    • Electronic flash apparatus for photographic purposes, of the type in which light sensitive integrating means receives light reflected from the subject being photographed, and terminates the flash when the reflected light reaches a threshold value. A special circuit is provided for greatly increasing the speed of response to the reflected light, thus enabling the production of a flash of extremely short duration as required in close-up photography. This avoids the overexposure which often occurs with conventional electronic flash apparatus when taking close-up photographs. The control circuit includes a capacitor, a resistor, and an inductance, so dimensioned that the time constant formed from the resistor and the capacitor is equal to the time constant formed by the resistor and the inductance. This enables the response time of the control circuit to be measured in nanoseconds rather than in microseconds.

    • Electronic flash apparatus of the so-called computer type, having a sensor for receiving light reflected from the object being photographed, to determine the instant at which the flash should be extinguished, in order to provide just the right amount of light for the photographic exposure. The housing or casing of the flash unit is divided into two parts movable relative to each other. The main part of the housing contains the sensor. Pivotally attached to the main housing portion, for rotation about an axis at an angle to the optical axis of the sensor, is a lamp head portion containing the flash lamp and its reflector. In the normal position, the optical axis of the reflector is parallel to the optical axis of the sensor. When the lamp head is turned through 180* on its rotary axis, the optical axis of the flash reflector is at a substantial angle to the optical axis of the sensor (usually 90* or somewhat less than 90*) so that the main housing part may be held with the sensor axis correctly pointing toward the object to be photographed, while the light from the flash tube and its reflector is projected upwardly onto the ceiling, to provide indirect or ''''bounce'''' lighting for the object to be photographed.

    • A mirror reflex camera of the type in which a diaphragm adjusting member is driven from maximum diaphragm aperture position toward minimum aperture position, and in which a photocell receiving light through the lens and the diaphragm is part of an electronic circuit which stops the closing down movement of the diaphragm aperture adjusting member when the photocell senses that the diaphragm has reached the proper aperture for the intended photographic exposure. The invention relates particularly to the brake which stops the movement of the diaphragm adjusting mechanism when the aperture is at the proper point. A rotating disk which is part of the adjusting mechanism normally has a very small air gap from the poles of an electromagnet. When the magnet is energized, it draws the disk into actual contact with the poles of the magnet, forming an effective quick-acting brake. The electronic circuit is adjusted to energize the electro-magnet shortly before the diaphragm reaches the desired aperture, to compensate for the unavoidable time lag in operation of even a quick-acting brake of this kind, so that when the movement is stopped by the brake, the aperture will be at the desired value.

    • An adjustable diffusing screen to be mounted in front of an illumination source such as an electronic flash tube, or a flash bulb. The screen has two superimposed layers of transparent material with grooves formed in each layer, one layer being movable laterally with respect to the other. When the grooves of one layer are in a certain position relative to the grooves of the other layer, the screen provides minimum diffusion of the light source, sufficient to illuminate a normal field of view of the associated camera, such as the field of view when using a normal or standard lens. When the grooves in one layer of the screen are moved to a different position relative to the grooves in the other layer, the screen provides diffusion of the light source over a greater area, to illuminate a wider field of view of the camera, such as obtained when using a wide angle lens on the camera.

    • A photographic slide projector is provided with electrically driven means for changing slides. Each slide is provided with a projection or protuberance on one edge of the slide, in a variable position depending on the length of time it is desired to have this particular slide held in viewing position. The projector mechanism includes a feeler which is displaced by the projection on the slide when the slide is shifted from the slide magazine into slide viewing position within the projector, the extent of displacement of the feeler depending upon the position of the projection on the slide. The extent of displacement of the feeler, in turn, determines the setting of a variable resistor which controls the operation of a timer which controls the length of time that the slide is held in viewing position, before the slide change drive operates to move the slide back into the magazine and to shift the next slide from the magazine into viewing position.
