    • A catalytic converter for a small engine and a method for manufacturing the same include a honeycomb body coated with catalytically active material and made from at least partly structured layers of sheet metal with channels for the passage of exhaust gas. In order to reduce manufacturing costs, the honeycomb body is placed in a silencer housing disposed in the proximity of the engine, in such a way that at least a predominant portion of exhaust gas of the small engine has to flow through the honeycomb body. The honeycomb body is a layered, wound or folded stack of sheet metal layers, which is squeezed into the silencer housing, plastically deforming at least 10% and preferably 20 to 30% of the channels, so that it completely fills at least a partial volume of the housing. Due to the considerable plastic distortion of a part of the channels, there is also a high degree of elastic deformation in the rest of the honeycomb body, which also ensures the stability of the honeycomb body, even under varying thermal stresses.

    • An extruded honeycomb body, in particular a catalytic converter carrier body, having a plurality of passages through which a fluid can flow and of which at least a portion is bordered and/or separated from each other with passage walls of a first thickness and at least a portion is bordered and/or separated from each other with passage walls of a second thickness. The first thickness is less than the second thickness and the honeycomb body has a wall structure which stabilizes it and which is formed with passage walls of the second thickness. The stabilizing wall structure has a plurality of approximately straight wall portions of the second thickness which, transversely with respect to the local configuration of the edge of the honeycomb body, extend from a respective outside into the interior of the honeycomb body or extend through the honeycomb body. Honeycomb bodies according to the invention, have good stability, and can have particularly thin passage walls whereby they have at least locally a particularly low thermal capacity.

    • A sheet metal layer of a layer-like configuration with rolled-on brazing material and a process for producing a honeycomb body by stacking and/or winding sheet metal layers made of a layered material. At least a part of sheet metal layers for honeycomb bodies have a structure forming channels through which a fluid can flow. At least part of the sheet metal layers is formed initially of a layered material with at least one layer of chromium-containing steel and at least one mainly aluminum-containing layer, that are homogenized to a large extent during a subsequent heat treatment. The layered material is provided with at least one additional layer made of brazing material when it is produced by rolling, so that during a subsequent heat treatment at least parts of contact locations between the sheet metal layers are joined by brazing. The brazing material is preferably located only in a partial area of a bonding layer of the layered material, preferably in the form of brazing strips that extend along at least one edge.

    • A process for the production of a honeycomb body, preferably a catalyst carrier body, from two differently constructed kinds of high temperature corrosion-resistant sheet metal layers which are wound and/or stacked in a layer-wise manner and which at least partially have a structure for forming passages through which a fluid can flow. A portion of the sheet metal layers is formed of a substantially homogenous steel containing at least chromium and aluminum. Another portion of the sheet metal layers has a layered construction with at least a first layer of chromium-containing steel and at least a second layer substantially containing aluminum. The sheet metal layers are connected together by a heat treatment, wherein the sheet metal layers of layered construction are homogenized by diffusion. The use of differently constructed kinds of sheet metal layers provides for a good connection between the sheet metal layers in spite of a possible reduction in volume of the sheet metal layers of layered construction in the heat treatment.
