    • Novel powder coating compositions containing reactive hyperbranched polymers are disclosed and claimed. Preferred embodiments include powder coating compositions formed from hyperbranched polyesters having terminal hydroxy, carboxy, epoxy, and isocyanate groups. Preferred hyperbranched polyesters are formed from .alpha.,.alpha.-bis-(hydroxymethyl)-propionic acid, which act either as crosslinkers, adhesion promotors, or flow and leveling agents. A process for the synthesis of powder coating compositions is also disclosed which involves (a) self condensation of one or more of the multifunctional monomers to form the hyperbranched polymer, optionally, in the presence of suitable reactive end-capping moieties which are described herein; (b) melt blending of the hyperbranched polymer with suitable amounts of one or more of polyesters, epoxy resins, blocked urethane resins, or acrylic resins, a crosslinker, and one or more of suitable additional ingredients including degassers or flow and leveling agents, to form a flake; and (c) grinding and sieving of the flake to form the powder coating composition. These compositions exhibit improved flow and curing properties. These compositions can therefore be formed into thin films and can be cured at low temperatures to form smooth surfaces. Additionally, these films are hard and exhibit enhanced impact resistance properties than the conventional polyester resins. Thus, these powder coating compositions find utilities in automotive, packaging, and appliances.

    • A sulfonic acid-functionalized vinyl alcohol copolymer is provided which is characterized by a substantial absence of compositional drift. The copolymer is produced by polymerization in two continuously-fed reaction zones such that the ratio of sulfonic acid-containing comonomer fed to the first reaction zone to the sulfonic acid-containing comonomer fed to the second reaction zone is within the range of about 55:45 to about 80:20. The resin is characterized by a resistance to irreversible dehydration upon exposure to harsh chemicals and by retention of hydroxide functionality upon aging. A resin composition comprising a copolymer lacking compositional drift is also provided for preparation of an oil and grease barrier coating, an oxidation resistant water soluble package, or a battery separator.

    • In a method of preparing an aqueous dispersion selected from drilling fluids, hydraulic cement compositions, mineral pigment containing coatings, and papermaking furnishes or in a method of preparing a melt extrudate, the improvement comprising: a) producing a copolymer of vinyl alcohol (VOH) and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl propane sulfonic acid or a salt of such acid (AMPS) by steps including continuously feeding with agitation, vinyl acetate (VAM) and AMPS as comonomers, a free radical yielding polymerization initiator, and a solvent for said comonomers, initiator, and copolymer resulting from the copolymerization of said comonomers, maintaining the resulting reaction mass in said first reaction zone under polymerization conditions for a residence time sufficient for a major proportion of AMPS fed to said first reaction zone to polymerize, continuously feeding reaction mass from said first reaction zone with an additional supply of AMPS to a second reaction zone, maintaining the reaction mass in the second reaction zone for a residence time sufficient to polymerize a major proportion of the AMPS added to the second reaction zone, continuously withdrawing reaction mass from the second reaction zone, separating copolymer of VAM and AMPS from the latter reaction mass, and saponifying by hydrolysis and/or alcoholysis a major proportion of the acetate groups in said copolymer to form a copolymer of VOH and AMPS; and b) incorporating the saponified copolymer into the aqueous dispersion or melt extrudate.
